I know this is not a gun site but you guys know soooo much, it helps me on hundreds of subjects.
I have a REDFIELD WIDEVIEW circa 1980 mounted on a Remington 700, .270 It is a 3X9 approx 30MM (oval) It's been a good scope, it DID fog up once years ago but they re-sealed it under warrenty.
I'm getting older now and my vision isn't as sharp as it used to be. I'm seeing ads for 40MM and 50MM scopes. Some have addit. small horizontal lines for longer ranges. I know the old adage about getting what you pay for but I'm looking at a "Pentax" from Sportsmans guide selling for $79. Will this be junk? Suggestions? Thanks.

I would say to save your money, what you have is probably a better scope. There are plenty of good options today for not a lot of money, but you are correct, you get what you pay for.

I disagree. Today's scopes are MUCH better than scopes of 20 years ago. The coatings on todays scopes prevent glare so much better and are generally much clearer glass. Also the scope adjustments are much better IMO.

I took off an old scope such as the OP has....and replaced it with a low cost brand (I forgot which one) on an old Remington 742. It's much improved now.

I would get a medium duplex reticle and not get too fancy in this area....unless you are into shooting at ranges over 400 yards. (which is not for very many shooters)

There are always good values out there in scopes today. Read about different price ranges for scopes at the Chuck Hawkes site. He reviews lots of good equipment....and I feel his advice is pretty much spot on.

OH....and one good scope currently on sale at Natchez (a good place to shop for a deal.....regardless of brands) is the Bushnell 3200 3x9x40. I just bought one for $139.

I know what your thinking.....Bushnell??? BUT....the 3200 and 4200 Bushnell's are pretty good glass for the money.

And.....welcome to TBN!

Just stay away from the really cheap versions .......... and most brands have the "bottom of the barrel line".

I bought one this summer ( Bushnell ) for a 10/22 and the cross-hairs rotated like a Timex with every shot.

I took it back right away.

I am a Leupold fan;I think I have six.I don't buy the $800-$1,000 ones tho, most of mine cost between $200.00-$250.00 ,2x7 and 3x9.I have never had a problem in thirty years.
Another note;I think I just read that Leupold now owns Redfield and are made in the same factory and people that assemble the Leupolds.

I have a 6-24 power Bushnell scope on my deer rifle that hasn't been adjusted since right after I bought it years ago. I wouldn't have bought scope but it was already on gun. I love it. Aaron :confused2:

To start off, I am a Leupold man also. I do use the higher end models. However, I have had really good experience with BSA scopes. For the cheaper end of the scope market , they give you much more "bang for your buck".

I just went on the website to get more info and they want to know WHICH ACTION (LONG OR SHORT) Remington 700????? What kind of a question is that? I bought it in 1984, it's a 700 BDL cal .270
Then they ask ONE piece or 2 Piece base mount.....I don't have the gun with me at this time... I don't suppose my old Weaver rings would be tall enough to accomodate a 40MM scope......?
