GM introduces Diesel off road pickup

I like it, its really cool looking (though I'd stick with the current front clip, this one looks like a Honda Ridgeline on mega steriods), but is there a real market for these? Both Dodge and Ford have mentioned that they expect low sales numbers. These are cool, but not pratical. And there is no forcast for lots of expendable cash for most people in the future. With that price tag, I think it will be a difficult sell.

Second; What is this truck going to do better than the Raptor or the Power Wagon? In the desert the Raptor would have the advantage, being much lighter. The rocks and slow trails would be much closer between the PW and this thing, but still, no huge advantage. This truck will be big and very heavy, so I can't see any advantage offroad.

Third; Where's the cool name GM? You can't introduce a monster like that without a name. I vote for the name "Gorilla".

GM would have something much more marketable bringing the old SS 2wd 1/2 ton back with the 6.2L V8. Make it fast and affordable. Nothing in their line up is cheap and cool. Its either one or the other. They should address that first before adding more premium vehicles to the line up.

You talking gov-loc? Those things aren't in the same class as an ARB or other good electric locker.

Mine locks up great with no problems getting me unstuck, but what do I know with only 70,000 miles & 4 years of actual use & ownership.

Better than clutch packs that get weaker with every lock and then wear out completely. . They're junk.

Spent too much time on the rocks and slow trails. Solid axle rules(ie Power Wagon). Better ground clearance, better articulation. If IFS was a good off-road package, then Jeep CJ, Wrangle, Rubicon would have them.

Even in Toyota's, the first thing serious off-roaders out here do, throw away the IFS and either put an older Toy straight axle in, or put in Chevy straight axles. I have yet to see anyone go the other way, on any truck or Jeep.

The only IFS rig that I know of that could be an all around off roader, is a Hummer. But, the Hummer is definitely your typical IFS.

In defense of the Chevy though, I'm guessing there are not many who will spend $45-60k and then go scratch it up on the trail...

The rocks and slow trails would be much closer between the PW and this thing, but still, no huge advantage. This truck will be big and very heavy, so I can't see any advantage offroad.

Yep, so GM blind you can not see the fault in it. Too funny.

No doubt that your right RobertN. Keep in mind that I own two trucks with kingpin style Dana 60s. I preffer them. However I would think that with the new wish bone suspension and all that jazz in the article, that this GM creation would have a much more stout frontend than the stock trucks. IE not just a lifted IFS.

But wouldn't its massive girth impeed it more? I'd be surpirzed if it could fit through a trail head gate. Can't perform very well on the rocks if it can't get on the trail in the first place. Plus add the weight of a full sized crew cab truck and diesel engine and I just don't see it working out. Not for desert running (weight), mud bogging (weight) or rock climbing (size). Probably a blast to drive on moderate dirt roads. But so would a regular 2500HD.

I guess we really couldn't tell until its produced, if its any good off-road or not. To me, it sure doesn't seem like it would be.

Nobody liked the name "Gorilla"? What about "King Kong"? Or "Large Marge"? Maybe some infringment rights on those two though...

BTW - the Gov Lok in my 04 is still working as it should at 148K miles.

I wore out my clutch packs in my last phord at 49,000 miles. Proabably because I actually used them a lot for plowing. I wwas left with a open rear. While they were wearing out, they only got very weak rotation from the wheel with traction, then none at all.

Purchase of a truck with a real locker solved that problem.

Looks like whoever is running GM now has been watching the competition. They have used most every good idea from Dodge and Ford on this one.

Looks like someone's here (again) to turn it into a GM bashing thread.
Guess some things will never change.

What is too funny is the "pot" calling the "kettle" black. Read your post from another thread....

[NO, Ford is good at building the best trucks and best selling trucks for some 30 years now. They are the most innovative, have the best creature comforts, best tow capacities, nicest interiors, and are second to none.

Story over.
