Anyone been over at AS lately?

Hope this isn't a bad thing to mention another site if so I sure do apologize?

Wow did they change the look its totally different it surprised me I almost thought I was at the wrong forum!

Looks interesting apparently rep is different (maybe not even used now?) and what they call credits is something you get for posting and starting threads now check it out.
Yes
They are fixing it - colors are not blinding
Rep and post count are meaningless statistics anyways

But if I had stuck here I wouldn't have 2 Stihl 660's with modded mufflers (and one of them producing power like a Stihl 880) for the cost of one new one. And making furniture from wood I've milled.

Face it not many of us can afford three tractors for personal use. But on AS almost everybody has at least 3 chainsaws. (I've 5 runners)

Here almost every used tractor costs thousands so we have a lot more invested. And the education level of the members seems higher here.

When visiting forums it's important to take into account the "center mass" of the forum. There are some "green" forums that if you mention chainsaw you get jumped on. But they have great info on hybrid cars.

I should add that there is a wealth of info at AS for anyone that's reading this and unaware of the site there are pros in many different arborist type endeavors.

As has been mentioned you may find the urge to buy a saw or 10 or learn how to properly fell a tree w/o killing everyone around mainly YOU!

There are some real fine people that do help the new guy myself included so don't take anything in a negative way overall or be afraid to ask a question you take the good with the bad as is everywhere.

The new look just took me by surprise and just wondered if anyone here had seen it I was just there earlier this week it was the other way. :confused2:

And newbury I agree with you the rep at least had a life of its own it seems my rep givin and received was completely based on merit and quality of posts not who posted it. The beg for rep Andy started was a joke and it definitely went haywire imo.

Yes there are lots of good folks over there more than willing to help people out. I just find that the few "snobbish" and "cliquety (if thats a word)" types overshadow the good ones on there.

Thats usually why I if I cannot find the answers I am looking for by searching, I am reluctant to post until I have exhausted all other resources and even asked over here. I will say that I am very greatful that the mods here decided to add a chainsaw section. I can see this being one of my favorite new sections of this great community.

And another note about AS and some of the things I mentioned earlier about the moderators there and banning people. A few of them started their own forum. Racesaws.com I think. It is a lot of the same negativity at AS, but mostly directed at AS. They refer to AS as "the other site". But I havent been on that forum in over a year so maybe things changed. And last I knew, If you even mentioned racesaws on AS, they would delete your post or ban you. And the guys there are mostly geared toward hotsaws, saw racing sports, alcohol saws, etc.

But to each his own. I would much rather "waste" my day reading here on TBN than on AS.

Can someone educate me about these "rep points" some other sites use? Do members give each other points? It seems like it would be somewhat of a popularity contest, a little like high school. The cool or popular people get the most reps?

Where do the points come from? Is there money involved with the points? Can they be used for anything, or traded? Do members buy points? Perhaps it is a method for the site host to generate some income to keep the site running? That would make sense.

I've seen these reps at other sites but never understood the why's and how's? To someone to does not know anything about the process, it looks a little silly from the outside.

So I'm hoping someone can get me up to speed on this.

Thanks!

Edit: I'm not referring to AS specifically. I've seen these points used on a number of totally unrelated sites. I'm not trying to make any comments about AS. Just looking for general understanding.

Well I don't know of other sites that use rep, so I can only speak on behalf of AS.

But you are right, it is really like a popularity contest.

Basically, members give eachother rep, both positive and negative. The higher the rep of the person giving the rep, the more points the reciever gets. So If you have little or no rep, and you rep someone, they dont get as many points as rep given by someone with a lot of rep.

Rep can be given for numerous reasons. The way it was intended was, if someone made a good post, you reped them.

Like on this site, If someone built something, gave lots of hepful detail, pleanty of pics, etc, you would rep them. If they gave good advice to a problem someone was having, you reped them.

But if someone (we dont have many here) is always saying negative things, and just posting to be posting and not being helpful, or always argumentative, you would give negative rep. This would take away their points.

It was intended to be kinda like the feedback score on ebay. So newer members can see at a glance who has a history of giving good sound advise and always makes posts that are worth reading. You can also see who are the ones whos posts arent worth the time it takes to read.

Does that clear things up for you?

rep-

Rep added up a lot faster for you if the person giving the rep had a pile of them and viseversa and so on so forth each symbol has certain points and once you got so many a new symbol would appear under your name.

The idea was sound imho the application is where a lot of people had issues with and really lots of people could care less and didn't pay any attention to it whatsoever.

The butt kissing (my words) was done usually to the ones with the most rep sort of a mutual back patting society for a certain group of them and that's my personal feelings on the subject I may be wrong about the reasoning.

It looks like the rep is one reason there is a change going on but I could be wrong?
