What do you think about adding sulfur to diesel fuel? You can buy sulfur as a soil supplement, I wonder if it would work? How much to add per gallon?

Ahhhhh, no. Why would you want to do that? :confused2:

Ditto what Happyman said. Not all "sulfur" is the same AND it eats steel. If your goal is lubricity, purchase an additive.

The lack of lubricity may be an issue for older diesel engines which were designed for the older diesel fuel.

But I'm sure that the sulfur in diesel is not the same as you would find in fertilizer.

One of the better (and cheapest) additives for lubricity is outboard engine (marine) two cycle engine oil, the stuff you mix with gas for a outboard engine.

There is a very long thread at
Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place
on various additives. Some do not help at all.

The lack of sulfur in the fuel is NOT what is causing less lubricity.. It is the process of removing the sulfur that caused less lubricity..

As mentioned, I add 1oz/gal of fuel of 2 cycle outboard oil to my Dodge Ram/Cummins..

Adding soil amendments to your fuel would have disastrous consequences; your engine would immediately be destroyed.

I keep a cocktail for lubricity of 2 parts supertech 2 cycle and one pat white power service premixed in one of the 2 gallon safety tanks and add ~2oz. per gallon of diesel. I don't know it makes that much difference, but it does sound quieter, and seeems to keep the water separator dryer.

OK! I know it sounded silly but I got the information I was looking for.

Sounds like 2 cycle oil will be my additive as I already have some generic brands that I do not use sense I started using Stihl oil in all my saws and trimmers.

The reason for the post was I have noticed that my tractor is harder to start lately and fuel consumption fluctuates. I buy small quantities of fuel 95% from the same place. Sometimes I can tell a difference after a fill up.
I really noticed the difference when I was given a few gallons of #1 off road fuel that was 15 to 20 years old (maybe older). My tractor really liked that stuff.

Another thing, I have heard the old timers say they would add a little unleaded gas to their fuel back in the day. Was that for better combustion or just to keep it from gelling in cold weather?

FWIW, everything I have read says to use marine 2 cycle oil, not the 2 cycle you would use in a saw/trimmer. Since marine units are water cooled, and run cooler, they use a different oil.

Now perhaps your surplus stuff will work, but for the low cost of the marine stuff, I would go that way.

The cheapest and easiest marine oil to find (at least in my area) is the Walmart SuperTech TWC3.. The TWC3 is the certification you are looking for..

I have heard of automatic transmission fluid being added but cannot confirm or recommend.

No... ATF is NOT reccomended as a fuel lubricity additive in the newer common rail injection systems.. ATF and MMO are not a combustible fuel. That being said, I HAVE used ATF to neutralize unleaded fuel that was accidentally pumped into the tank of an old 7.3 PSD. But, it was a "have to situation" in the middle of the night about 12 hours from Texas.. and in an older, lower pressure engine.
I would not put anything but a modern fuel additive or some quality 2 stroke oil into a modern engine.
