we found out that you could plug the tractor in about 2 or 3hrs before you wanted to crank it.if you plug it in the nite before itll run your electric bill up.because those heaters use alot of juice.

Ok so I can't take credit for this cause I read it here on TBN first but thought I'd share it anyways. This is brilliant!

I bought this at Ace Hardware for like $25 bucks. I'm sure it's sold elsewhere. I plug my engine heater into this and click it on from the house.:) No need to go out in the cold to plug in your baby before you go out to plow. The only badfall about this is that you can't really tell if it started by just clicking it.....(no on light).....sooooo I plugged a worklight along with the engine heater so now when I click from inside the house and see the worklight come on.....I know the engine heater is on also. GENIUS!!!

I LOVE this place!!:p

I have a similar timer.
Only way to go!
With a heater of 4-500 watts it pays for itself rapidly and makes cold weather tractoring much more pleasant.
Another + is that the cabin heat (if installed) comes on faster as the coolant is 'pre heated'.

I use the plug in timer for block heaters on tractor and truck when needed, But those remote switched outlet controls are great, I've had one for a few years.

This year I bought a 3 pack of them at Home Depot it has I remote with 3 sets of switchs on it, (3 seperate channels) it's very handy for the Christmas lights around the outside of the house.

I may have posted on this before, but I have a bunch of diesels--cars, trucks, jeeps and tractor--and put a trickle-charger (battery tender, e.g.) on the same plug ...you'd be pleasantly surprised at how they start after being plugged in...and this is particularly useful when they have sat idle for a few weeks.

Currently -8 below. Heading for lower tonight and a high of "0" tomorrow. And another 2 to 6" of snow. At least it will be fluffy snow.

I use an outdoor rated timer. It has multiple plugs so I sometimes plug in a work light just to make sure it is timed right.

Have an older model JD855 and this system works well for me.

By the way..........
Don't forget to loop the drop cord through the steering wheel.
I now know just exactly how far out of the shed my cord will reach........... :ashamed:

Yup been there done that with the truck, didn't even realize it till I came home and found the cord strecthed out about twice it's normal length in the yard. Now I throw it over the side mirror so it's less likely to forget.

I use one of those cords with light on the female end so you can tell when there's power on, can't see it from the house but at least if i'm out there I can.

In the winter I don't use my truck or tractor everyday so I only plug them into the timer when I'm pretty sure I'll need them the next day.

For the ocassional user that remote from OP would be just right if within range.

For your barn with no electricity, you could mount a little solar panel to keep a battery charged. Then connect an inverter through a gizmo like this. You'd have to have it between the battery (e.g. 12v) and the inverter because I know of no way to turn the inverter off.

Could maybe just work it on a 12v timer if you run the tractor every day.

Don't know how long a heater would run from a battery charge.

Ezlivin--Thanks for the post. I just bought one at Ace. FYI for all who are wondering: It is rated for up to 150 feet (touch and go in my situation) Rated for 960 watts and up to 13 amp draw. My frost plug heater (JD) is 400 watt. Tried it out and it works like a charm. Sure beats hiking out to the shop to plug it in!
