Engine Overhaul

The sleeve won't be stainless. It should be the same or similar alloy material as the block. It has to have the same thermal expansion rate and it has to have the same wear / friction as the block to be compatible with the ring metallurgy. If the sleeve is harder, the rings won't seat properly. Being a repair sleeve it will be dry and not flanged at the top. It gets machined flush with the block when the deck surface is dressed.

Yes, there are some flanged dry and always wet sleeves, but the flanged are part of the original block design.

Thanks for the explanation. My buddy changed the sleeves on his Ford 8n. Did not get a good look at it, certainly was not cast like the rest of the block. I wondered if it is some low carbon steel rolled and seam welded. I'd should research to see how it is made.

Ahh, but the 8N was designed with sleeves! The earlier ones I believe were a (relative) thin steel and the later ones cast iron sleeves.

There's a new tractor roaming around the neighborhood. Here's a picture after we got it running yesterday.
Next is to rebuild the front end loader and then the mower. They will both get a paint job to match the tractor.

1200 hours is not a lot of hours. That piston would look like that from overheating or oil starvation, neither one is good for long piston life.

I prefer not to use calipers when doing close measurements, too much error when compared to a good micrometer.

Piper, nice tractor results. Also like your avatar

Outstanding job!

You will get many years of satisfaction from that old tractor still.

Wow...that looks like new. Now you have a tractor that you KNOW what has been done to it! I bought a 1920 a few months back. I bought it from a woman...which at the time I thought was a good thing. Bad mistake. She never changed the hydro fluid and the rest of it just looks neglected. I wish I would have passed on that one.
