This is the new owner's spinoff from my previous post on comparing the YM1700 and the YM2000 :)

When I was checking my very cool tractor-to-be out the owner said sometimes it diesels when shutting it down.

California wrote back then "YM2000 is stopped by pulling the throttle to zero which shuts off all the fuel."

So I have my terrific tractor home and it starts like a champ -- but when I go to shut it off, it doesn't. Shut off, that is.

My book is actually for the YM240 series so the throttle is the opposite, but I follow the shut down procedure and when I push the throttle forward ("slow"), the engine slows down ... ... .. .. . . . . . .

But it doesn't stop running.

Husband is going to check it out tomorrow.

Any ideas?

(And no, it's not still running. We do shut it off. Just not the way it's supposed to be shut off. )

No Big Deal Almost a good thing.Runs so good it doesn't want to shut off :p Here a pic of the Adj. and Linkage. Just loosen the Nuts and move Arm Backwards a little more. Shutting down the fuel.

When my tractor started doing the same thing, I put a couple of drops of oil on the linkage and put a little more tension on the spring. That cured the problem.

What they said - adjust the linkage so it pulls the governor clear to zero.

I read of someone who had to reach under the dash and tug on that rod because the linkage was sloppy. If so I would replace it. Another alternative specifically recommend against in the manual is to idle down then use the compression release.

On my second Yanmar I had to add a screen door spring to the governor arm to pull it to zero, when the linkage was pushed all the way to zero.

But fix this. You have a safety issue if the engine keeps running after you fell off the tractor or something.

Congratulations on your new Yanmar! That thing is gorgeous, probably the nicest one I've seen.

Thanks y'all.

Will show it to my husband in the morning. I think that's what he had in mind as the problem. But this saves him the muddling around.

(I don't like to mess up the manicure with the nitty gritty stuff.)

Oh BTW -- baptized the FEL with my horse manure this evening.

That's odd, because on all my GT's, the only way to shut it down is with the release. There's a seperate cable specifically for the compression release, but there's another specifically to shut down the engine. They both appear to do the same thing.

I would prefer the setup you guys have, as cables snap eventually.

On my YM2001 there is a release below the throttle arm, idle down and pull it out, it looks just like the decompression release (on left side of dash) but it just kills the fuel to the engine regardless of throttle position.

It is not recommended to shut a diesel engine down with the decompression release unless in emergency situations.

In regards to the question, if the tractor doesn't stop when the throttle arm is pushed all the way forward you can lift the foot pedal throttle up with your foot and it will generally shut off, the issue is as stated above the linkage spring needs to be adjusted.

The foot pedal thing was my guess, Smoody, you beat me to it. Had to fix that on mine.

What everybody else said. Mine will sometimes shut off using the lever, but most of the time i just am in the habbit of reaching down and pulling the lever on the side of the motor shown in the piture back, to ensure proper shut off.

That's the same thing I was doing until I decided to take a look at the linkage under the throttle arm. Took it apart, cleaned and put a couple of drops of oil on the friction plate. It has worked fine ever since. I think it comes from combined wear in the linkage and the a little sticking at the very end of the closed position to be just enough to not fully shut the fuel off. Putting a little more tension on the spring might have also helped out.
