I see your textbook definition to it. But i have to argue this whole thing boils down to tax dollars. If you pay i doubt anyone will argue but i may be wrong i seem to be often?

The tax dollars thing brings up a good point, how come if he wants to send kids to that district it will cost 7K/yr. I doubt living in that area that they will pay anywhere near 7K in taxes let alone one that benefit the school. My primary residence will give a few hundred of my home taxes to schools and between the 4 cars registered they may get another $60/yr. I know there is a matching funds deal i guess from the state, but those inmy opionion should be transferrable. Nobody wins (but the kids of course) if mom quits a 40K a year job where she and hubby both pay taxs, to stay at home and take care of the kids and then the state not only looses all income tax she paid but likely they will pay little to none as all will be dependant on the lone salery of the dad.

I better quit while im a head these lawmakers are so much smarter than us. Thats why they make the laws and we make the money to pay them and for the laws.

I would be pissed at that, you don't use most of the services that the county provides, yet they charge you even more? Could that even be allowed?

I know they tax non-resident Hawaii property owners substantially more...

I believe politicians look at it as a win/win... non-resident property owners generally can't vote and resident owners feel better knowing they are getting a break.

Because it is not your primary residence. Calling it your primary residence does not make it your primary residence. You don't live there. You're using it as a sham. People that run for public office try this tactic often because they do not live in the district where they are running for office. Public servants try it, too, in order to get a job with a municipality that has residency requirements. When they are caught, they get kicked out of office and they lose their job with the municipality. It is dishonest on the most basic level.

I had rented an apartment to a minister with 4 children... unknown to me, he had his kids enrolled in a better school district in a adjacent city...

He called me on a Friday night and said he was in the process of moving and would be totally out Sunday night???

Come to find out he was caught and his kids would not be allowed to attend school in the other city since they did not live or work in that city.

Within hours he had rented a two-bedroom apartment in the district and his kids were able to stay... He left with basically no notice, and his damages exceeded the deposit...

I've lost tenants and neighbors due to schools. My city spends 16k per student per year and has many under-performing schools and this becomes an issue when your kids reach school age.

....

Yep, in this county can be a combination of higher rate and no exemptions. Good thing is schools are funded at state level and not by property taxes.

Our schools are funded primarily by local property taxes. The state set a goal of providing 55% of school funding, they have never come close.

Revenue sharing across school districts in states that fund primarily through local property tax is a complex and very contentious issue.

For districts with a high property tax base, they don't want to see their school funding sent elsewhere. On the other extreme, one small town can have something like the Poland Spring main bottling plant and are awash in tax collections and corporate donations while the next town over is starving for funds. I should clarify, towns are the principle governing divisions in Maine.

The school districts not only get some local property taxes for the kids enrolled, they also get federal and state dollars for each kid. If the kid comes from another district, they don't get those dollars, so they charge you. Here is a link that shows how much money is spent on each child by state. I think it is a 2008 chart. The national average was over 9K per child.
