check out You Tube, "Winchester PDX1, .410 demo",
Also check out the video of the dufus that was 7 feet from the target and couldn't hit the 10 ring, using the same ammo=PDX1:laughing::laughing:
Yup, a short barrel .410 is the answer to a home defense weapon, just think if he was 25 feet away:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Thank you Reily. That was what I was wanting to hear. I wasn't sure if it would be effective or not. Have you tried a bigger shot size? Doe the 9's penetrate and kill outright? I was thinking of using 4 shot, but its just theory for right now.

I already have a small collection of pistols and really want something as small and light as possible. I don't envision this as being a fun gun to shoot, but instead something that I will carry around because it's easy and light. The actual shot can have all the kick in the world because I wont notice it if I'm shooting a snake.

I have copper head and cotton mouth snakes here, plus half a dozen non poisonous snakes. There are also supposed to be timber rattlers, but I havent seen one of them yet.

Eddie

Eddie. I am planning to buy a snake gun for the tractor. Like you I don't like mr. no shoulders. I bush hog several low lying areas and see more than my far share of cotton mouths. I wanted one of the .410 pistols until I realized I would need to dismount the tractor for the short barreled pistol to be effective. For my needs I think the HR snake tamer will allow me to stay on the tractor and kill snakes. I will find out this summer.

Yep. The weapon and ammo are why he missed.

Everyone is a crack shot with a .45 ACP loaded with high grain cutters. Everyone.

Isn't one of the selling points of the Judge that it can handle both .410 AND .45lc ammo?

If the Judge is loaded with .45 lc ammunition, would it not be as effective as the 9mm/40sw/.357/.44 semi-auto or revolver for home defense? I don't have the ballistics information in front of me but I've got a .45lc and I KNOW I don't want to be shot with that.

With that in mind, why isn't the Judge, loaded with .45 lc, not as effective as something like a .38 special revolver, in the theatre of home defense. I would think it would be on pretty even terms, and then you also have the versatility of using a .410 shotshell for varmints (or skeet, or whatever, I guess). It may be bigger and bulkier than a .38 revolver, but in a HD scenario, where many folks have mentioned that a shotgun would be a preferred weapon (and I can't argue with that, either), I don't think that the larger size would matter.

I am no fan of the judge, but I could agree with most of this, Yes loaded with .45colt ammo the judge would be a good stopper at close ranges.. but in the test I have seen the (no first hand firing here), it seems not very accurate.. but across the room it would be good enough. And across the bedroom the BB and "slugs" load would probably work, but again, I have some doubts about the lack of penetration. And I think a good defensive handgun load with expanding projectiles would be better, in 9MM 40S&W or .45 acp the most popular calibers. As for the shot shells, reserve them STRICTLY for the snakes and little game at short range. They are totally ineffective as a manstopper, and that goes for 12 guage too beyond about 10 or 15 feet. and definetaly behind anything in the way of hard cover. On the other hand a 12 guage loaded with 00 buckshot is very effective, and with an 18 inch barrel it is still pretty manuaverable and effective to deploy.
So in my humble opinion, if the judge floats your boat, and you like the versatility, then by all means get one, but if you are considering defending your life with it I would recommend you stoke it with good .45colt ammo, and keep the ranges deployed short. Or get a good 12 guage with a short barrel and stoke it with 00, nothing smaller and you will be well armed..

I'm not interested in watching.

Your assertion is that the weapon and ammo make the shooter. I disagree. You also assert that the Judge is not a good home defense weapon. I also disagree with that.

Where we likely share some common ground is on the overkill front. My carry weapon is Kimber 45. My home defense weapon is the same gun on my nightstand, with several others located around the home. My personal armory is not too shabby either.

I wouldn't buy a Judge, don't think it's much to my liking. But I do know that if someone pulled the trigger on one while I was coming through their door, it would prevent me from achieving my goal.

So the real question is - are those airgun shootists really true gunners??:D:D
