I've been looking (longingly) at the 55 series tractors - a lot of people talk about how it was the perfect tractor series from JD. I tend to agree - but probably for the same reasons I like Grand Wagoneers and Saab 900s. Purpose built and a lot of steel.

So, I took out the 55-series brochure I've had for years and discovered almost all of the tractors - even those with mid-mount mowers - have ag tires in the literature. I know they preceded the R4 style, which is popular now, but I'm kind of surprised that JD doesn't offer this option on the 2000 series. I know Kubota offers them on their B-series comparably-sized tractors, as does Kioti. Don't know about New Holland or others.

Is the R4 just too similar?

I guess my point is, I would have opted for them on my 2320 - especially because I have such hard ground and don't mow with it.

I've wondered that myself, but if they did,I would want them as wide as my 14-17.5's:)

Yep, I wondered the same thing...Kubota even offers the AG's on the BX's...

It could be that when they did offer them for small tractors, they did not sell many of them so they just stopped offering them. Gota figure 99% of the people buying these machines are cutting grass as a primary function-and you don't want R1's for that.

To go one further, probably 90% of those 99% of people buying these machines want the R4's because they "look cool" and never gave any thought whatsoever to the tire's performance.

I agree with what kennyd & Mechanos posted, plus the equivalent R1 tires are skinny. If the R1s were a size or two larger, more would have sold, on their looks, like the R4s do.

I would think Ag tires for say my 2320 would be so narrow and with the tractor being so light that if I got stuck all the tractor would do is dig you in deeper. On a really hard surface and again with the tractor being so light the tractor would have the tendency to slide or spin. I would not even consider Ag tires for the 2000 series.

Seriously, if you have work that requires ag tires then get a larger tractor. The 2000 series are lawn mower/multi purpose tools, for this turf or R4 tires would work great.

I'm surprised by these responses. My Farmall Cub is plenty light, but has a lot of traction with Ags - wouldn't want turfs on it. Doesn't dig in at all, nor slide any more than other 2-wheel-drive smaller tractors I've used Again, they are a popular choice around here on the B-series and most 55-series I've seen in person.

I would have thought it was because the R4s are similarly aggressive, but seem to be far more puncture resistant that would cause Deere to phase them out. Thought that doesn't explain to my why they remain an option for similarly-sized Deere competitors.

And how big is the rear tires on the Cub? I would guess a lot more tire is on the ground compared to these little bitty tires on these newer compacts.

I'd LOVE R1's for Winter here in Northern Wisconsin.

R4's in snow are like a fish out of water.

Also...On the X700 series you can get AG's on the rear...

I had those on the back of my 2210, and Oh My did they have traction. It was like a Bulldozer with those on.

My opinion...Unless your working in dirt all the time I see no reason to have Ag tires (R1). Besides the R4 look so much better.

My tractor doesn't go in PARADE'S, so I could care less what the tires "Look" like. I want traction, and if that means PINK Tires, then Pink it is!

I'll disagree on both counts.:)
I have V bar chains this year, none last year. My R4's are so much better in the snow now. If I had R1's with those chains it would be simply awesome. I had a small 2WD garden tractor (Speedex) with R1's and chains and it was a tank in the snow.

As for looks, when you see R1's they just "look" like they mean business.

I don't have anything against R1. When the time comes when I would need them I wouldn't hesitate to buy some. But for the time being I mostly cut grass so the R4 work great since I clean a bit of snow also. I would asume turf tire wouldn't be too good in the snow without chains so thats why I went with th R4's.
