I don't know how many times I have to state the following. The standards apply to the ID and OD, not what is going on in between. What is the measurement from the outside of the wire braid to the outside of the hose? Now how about on the ID side? Keep spinning that cylinder. Sooner or later, POW!!!!

First, the small differences in the moninal published OD are literally meaningless. The SAE standard allows a manufacturing tolerance of +/- 0.040" from the nominal dimension. Each hose manufacturer selects a nominal and then uses a typical OD tolerance of +/-0.030" to manufacture the hose to.
The first key is to make sure the hose style matches your fitting style. IE if you have a 100R2 fitting then you need a 100R2 hose. A SAE 100R16 hose will NOT work in a 100R2 style field attachable fitting. It is not simply an OD issue but how the wire will react to the compression of putting the fitting together.
Second, you need to use common sense. Field attachable fittings are NOT tested to the same standard that crimped on fittings are to begin with. Manufactures are required by law to test the hose and fitting for suitability. This does not mean that it will fail, but it means that if you use a combination that has never been validated, you are adding risk to yourself. The more critical the application the more care you need to take. If you could get hurt or someone else could get hurt if the hose fails, then let a professional do it. Doing it yourself and saving $10 is a high price to pay for a missing arm or a life.
Some people think that the only reason a manufacturer does not authorize you to put any fitting you want on any hose is simply to increase cost or force you to buy their product. There are more than forty different manufactures of SAE 100R2 hose that sell in North America and about 60 different fitting manufactures. There is just no way you can test every possible combination. The SAE charter does not allow them to write standards that "restrict a manufacture from making product but to provide general guidelines for suitability and use." So if you choose to mate two different companies products, you are adding risk to yourself, please make sure the risk does not cause danger to yourself or anyone near you.

:mur:....I hear ya.....I try not to look in the hydraulic section sometimes cuz of this stuff.....
It all depends which side of the fence you're on.....one side tries to save time and money doing "Disney Mouse" repair work, and the other side is trying to earn a living doing it the right way (taking on the liability when the stuff hits the fan)
I will not risk the liability involvement to open my myself to save somebody else a few bucks........heck, a $25. sale of the wrong advice/materials could potentially be someone elses windfall $$$$$......likely the lawyers.....!!...

Just an observation. I have never had a hydraulics vender/hose guy offer up any guarantee or warranty on a hydraulic product. Is this just assumed or is it a fact that the parts are guaranteed by the manufacture, and the labor that went into to hose assembly is warranted by the shop. How about a customer that wanted a new fitting on his hose. Is there any warranty on that application?
I can agree that manufactures have tested some of their parts and can say that the hose and fittings are guaranteed if made from the same manufacturer.
I have seen some of the hose guys make up hoses, and I don't remember seeing any micrometers utilized to measure anything. It just appeared that they looked at the fitting that needed replacing, and took it off the shelf, cut the old fitting off and crimped the new fitting on.
If you use a gates hose, and you don't have a certain gates fittings, do you use a similar product from another manufacturer?
I believe in being as safe as you can, but how about the reusable fittings. Is the liability placed solely on the user. I have used them and some people on the forum have used them. I would be curious if the makers of reusable fittings also make the hoses specified for use with the reusable fittings.
Don't need no arguments, just the facts only please.

I don't measure every crimp but do maybe every fifth or so. After don't it a while, I know how it should look. I have warranteed many a hose assembly. Even if it was user error. Just good business.
