I think I have the problem figured out. I did drain and clean the fuel bowl, No discernable water but there was some sediment. I am able to get the tractor to start if I hold in the fuel shutoff plunger. Of course my dealer has to order one, seems he never has anything in stock.

Does anyone know if I remove the solenoid will I be able to test it with a meter?

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions. Believe it or not this tractor was given to me by an elderly neighbor so I'm not sure how well it was maintained. It has about 750 hours on it, it's in pretty good shape cosmetically and everything seems to work just fine.

You should be able to check for continuity.

You may also check by apply 12 volt power to it.:)

I think if that fuel filter wasn't changed lately, just shut the fuel off and take the filter off. While the filter bowl is off open the valve and see if the fuel flows good, if it does replace filter with a new one. If that filter is getting brown or dirty looking it is probably bad, cause a new one is white. I heard this so many times but never had one shut off on me until last week while plowing snow. Luckly I had a spare on the shelf to replace. I already replaced 2 in one day because of dirt.

While were at it, does anyone know if I can download an owners manual. I need to know what the fluid capacities are.

When next week will your part be available?
Are you sure it is the plunger you were holding, or some protective device/switch in the system keeping the fuel shutoff?

I looked at my service manual for my BX to familiarize myself with what I was seeing. The BX fule shutoff solenoid looks very close to the 770. It has an electrical connebtion to a solenoid with a rubber boot and rod. If I hold in the rubber boot, thus moving the rod, the tractor will start and stay running if I keep it depressed.

I'm calling it the fuel shutoff solenoid, Deere may have another name for it.

It says Deere GL-5...I do believe it is the 90 weight but get confirmation from someone other than I. Very heavy and not very viscous.
