Eddie and Ryer,

Since your pigs are so tame, her is a way to see how much they weigh. Get a seamstress tape (cloth) and measure around the pig right behind his front legs. Like you would measure your chest, then multiply by 10.1709 and subtract 205.7492

Ex:
46" x 10.1709 = 467.86 -205.7492 = 262# should be accurate within 10# + or -

Found that info online the other day. Here is a link to the article: http://www.thepigsite.com/articles/1106/use-heart-girth-to-estimate-the-weight-of-finishing-pigs

Chris

Dang, they are similar to humans.:D

After reading this thread last night Eddie, I then began reading about neturing for pigs. Most of what I read was that you can't band them like steers. And the sooner you have them fixed, the better. Once they mature, and get much over 100 pounds, they can be a handful. Most people have them fixed around when they weight 20 pounds. Best to have an experienced operator do the serviceing.

Firefighter9208,
Eddie might get away with that but Maxwell still lives out in the wild and I don't trust him that much :). I would hate for a thread to be started on TBN titled "Whatever Happened To Ryer?" and for someone to say "I don't know...last I heard he was seen running off through the woods, chasing a wild hog with a tape measure!" :).

Eddie, after seeing your shelter for Oscar, I decided to break out the backhoe and dig Maxwell a pit. I dug it down 4 ft by 4 ft, covered it with old fence posts and an old tarp and covered that with sand. He is always digging little depressions in my yard to sleep in and the other morning I saw him covered with ice and I felt sorry for him...so I dug this shelter. So far, he walks by it and looks at it and then walks off and digs his own :(. This afternoon while feeding fish I noticed that my stand of pampas grass was chewed up and gone. Then I noticed Maxwell's sister (Little Girl) had built a nest with it on my island and was having more baby Maxwells for me to deal with.:confused2: I enclosed a photo of her peeking at me from the nest.

Any chance that hole will become a snake pit during the summer?

Radartech,
We do have a den of broad-banded copperheads under an old oak tree near by but ever since the pigs showed up...all the snakes seem to have vanished. On the flip side, we now have mice everywhere.

Sure would be fun to watch.

Sure seems like it. My wife measured my chest and it was 46". I got onto the bathroom scales this morning and I weighed 265. Of course I'm 6'9". I think pigs are a more uniform size (length) than we are height. A 5'9" person with a 46" chest wouldn't weigh anything near what I do.

Oscar was arrested yesterday and spent the night in jail.

Last night, he wasn't there to greet me, which was odd. He ususalyl runs up to me when I get home, just like you would expect a dog to do. This morning, his apple was still on my porch, and I was a little nervous. I walked around and couldn't find him anywhere. Then while loading up my truck with tools for work, the Constable drove up and asked me if I had a pet pig.

I said, "kind of." That he hung out here, but that he was a wild hog that was free to come and go as he wanted. I didn't know what to expect, but thought it was going to be expensive. He told me that there had been a hog on the highway and people were stopping to see him. Then they got out and were petting him. It because a hazard and the Sherrif showed up to see what was going on. He decided that Oscar must be a pet and decided to bring him in.

It blows me away that they would actually pick up a hundred pound pig and bring him in to keep him safe. WHERE ELSE WOULD THIS HAPPEN?

The kept him at the Low Risk Facility. I asked if they would charge me to go pick him up. I really didn't want to spend a bunch of money to go get him because I don't know if he'll just wonder off again. I would have, but not how I wanted to spend my money. The Leutenant said that if I came and got him, then would let me have him without me having to pay anything. I then told him that I didn't have any way of bringing Oscar back. I can't put him in my truck, and I can't let him loose in the back of my bed. He said I could borrow one of their big metal dog cages!!!!

Oscar actually looked happy to see me!!!

Two inmates got him into the cage and then the three of us carried him to my truck. The Seargant that came out to do the paperwork was laughing.

Once home, Oscar ate some dog food, an apple and some dirt. Then he went out to a sunny spot and instantly fell asleep.

When I got home this evening, he was there to greet me like normal. He even tried to untie my shoelaces!!!!!!

The adventures of Oscar continue...

Eddie

And the saga continues.
I think you need a sign at the road to your house..

Kinda like Cyril but more like this:

Use extreme caution:
Automatic mud machines in use..

Never seen a pig that could not make mud!

I'll get a professional sign graphic if you are interested...
