What is the purpose of the small chain on a PTO, is it simply to keep the PTO from separating?

Hook the chain onto the tractor or implement. It keeps the plastic PTO shield from spinning with the shaft.

Yes, its supposed to stop the PTO cover from rotating. In my experience it just breaks loose, and scratches the paint off of everything it can reach. I now just remove them and accept the associated safety hazards.

Interesting... I have not had any troubles with my PTO chains. Use them every time.

just grease both niple at the end of the shield and you wont break the plastic bearing who hold the chain

thanks for the orginal question. I thought that's what they were for, but was not sure. One attachement i purchased was made to use the stay chains, but the dealer did not have them on when it was sold/delivered. I've since added them.

So far, I've only had my RC for one season, but the PTO shaft cover spins very freely. I can't imagine how the chain would break. (It hasn't.) Perhaps if it starts filling with some sort of matter (grass clippings, dirt) over the years, it might start getting stiff and impede the rotational efficiency. I would imagine keeping it clean would be a big factor in its continued operational status.

This is stated correctly. If you grease the sheild zerks it will allow plastic parts to rotate easly and the light chains will not break under normal conditions.
