Could you use something like this?

YouTube - ATV-X TREECHOPPER!

I think that would work in most places. Where it might not work well is where we have groves of what I call "willows" that grow very close together. However, we could use this on my brothers Polaris and that would sure speed up the work! I'm not sure how well it would work on fence rows either.

I found this on utube, its what we had in mind building for the PT 425. It would handle the cedars and the "willows".

Wow! I wonder if the PT can go fast enough to cut that. Is this better than a brush cutter? What are its disadvantages? Do the blades need sharpening?

There is not a lot of building for something like this, Just find a 4 ft bush hog, and a hyd motor and coupler for the gear box. Add QA to the rig and you are done. Used bush hog about $300, hyd motor about $150 to $300.

The PT rough cut mower would so just as well.

JJ, Would you say that is the actual motor that should be used for the 425 with a 4' brush hog.

No. The motor should be chosen to match the pressure rating, and the GPM. This motor is designed as a PTO hyd motor, but it needs about 17 GPM to operate it. The 8 GPM from the 425 would run it, but would be about half speed. The splines are correct for this motor also.

Thanks JJ. So that motor will even hook right up with the splines. That is pretty cool! i wish I had a better understanding of how to figure out motors needed for different projects.:confused2:

We don't have much time and we're trying to keep the cost of this project under $500.00 so we decided to see what we can accomplish with the stump grinder motor and blade that I already have. We can mount the motor and blade assembly rotated 90 degrees from the original and it becomes a saw blade (sort of). Then it becomes a matter of how it will cut with that slow a rotation. The existing stump teeth may work for cedars as they are pretty soft. However, it will be better if we can find a way to fit a 12" saw blade onto the motor. We may have to have a machine shop make an adapter if necessary. If it cuts slow that's ok as its still better on our backs than using a chain saw!

It goes without saying we will be doing the necessary shielding on this rig to keep it safe.

Any ideas for connecting a saw blade to this motor would be appreciated.

We are also considering replacing the stump grinding blades with 4" sharp blades that we can make and heat treat to handle the abuse.

I converted my stump grinder to a 2" square mount so I could use it horizontally. That lets me approach the stumps from different angles. I've cut down a few saplings, but it was painfully slow. If I were going to use it for brush clearing, I would definitely adapt a circular saw blade.

mlhunter,

Tell me the cu in of the stump grinder motor, and diameter, and I can tell you the rpm, and blade tip speed. I don't think the rpm of the stump grinder is very fast. There are way to get fast, and that is more GPM's, and a smaller cu in motor. You can increase bld size for more blade tip ft per min.

Gravy,

Does your stump grinder motor have a tapered shaft or a straight shaft?
