Normally, we leave them alone, but when push comes to shove, I have been using a 410 single shot--snaker charmer 2 I believe. Short barrel makes it easy to handle.

The reason to bury the head is so your dogs or other pets don't get it and eat it. I usually dig a hole and throw the whole thing in and put a rock on top of it before filling in the hole.

NEVER, and I mean never hit a snake with a string weed whacker.
I hit a two foot garder snake and it flew up and wrapped right around my neck. Kinda nasty unwrapping that dead, bloody, gut covered thing off my neck.

OMG..If that had been a rattler, he would have got you for sure! One bite to the juggler vein, and its lights out..

If you are on your tractor, I would imagine that a shotgun will be a little difficult to carry. Therefore, like the last poster, I would recommend shotshells for your pistol. The Judge would be perfect, but you must own one first.

I also prefer the 38/357 shells if you have a 38/357. If not, they also make them in 22, 9mm and 45. I'm not sure, but they may also make them in 40.

They also work WONDERFULLY on snakes from 10-15 feet (if larger than the 22)

Couldn't have said it better myself, 38/357 works very well for me, don't kill many snakes, maybe 3 in the last 5 years and that was only because I absolutely had too. But, when cuting fields it is lots of fun shooting rats with the .38 rat shot while riding on the tractor. Keeps things from getting to boring:thumbsup:

When I first started mowing our property (with a brush hog) we had field rats everywhear, I would scare up 4 or 5 everytime I mowed. Only gun I owned at the time was a Browning 9mm Hi-Power, discovered 9mm shot shells and bought several boxes. Had a friend that is a gun nut and he somehow came up with a used Browning barrel that had most of the rifling shot out. The shot shells wouldn't cycle the Browning but it wasn't a big problem racking another cartridge in.

I had allot of fun till I got it cleaned up and started cutting it shorter with a flail mower. Now I never see one..

Around here we get an occasional watermoccasin or eastern diamondback rattlers but because of county ordinances your not suppose to shoot a firearm within 5000' of a residence.
Best thing I have found from poisonous snake confrontations here is to use a 9' CB radio antannae whip on body and destroy their skeletons.Completely immobolizes them(snakes).
Another "trick" is a good "ole" shoval,but don't try to kill the snake till you've threw a load of dirt in his/her face and kind- of blinded them.
Once again these remedies are for where you should not or cannot fire a shot.
BTW:Very rare but has happened if the snake is over 5' long and is a threat he gets introduced to 1 of my Remmy 870's or my 1100(12G).Usually with some kind of "turkey" load.

When I was growing up, we used a shovel or hoe to kill snakes too, but I have slowed down quite a bit.

Not mentioned so far, but when we do have to kill a rattlesnake, we eat it.

Just wondering... do that make a .40 shot shell that will run through an auto-loader? I'm not into the roundy-round guns.... but I'm not sure a shot shell would run through a magazine fed auto-loader.
