What's a good snake load?

Yes CCI makes handgun shoot shells for autoloaders. I have used a few in 9mm and they ran thru my glock and sig fine.. They seem to cycle just as good as other ammo.. the distance is not real good on them, its only #9 shot so 10 feet is about it.. I rather not get that close if I can help it, so a 20 gauage is better.. But I like Bulls idea on turkey loads thru a 12ga.. My choice is my Benelli M4- with 6 shot..

I use .22 pistol with Winchester shot loads. They are cheap and they get the job done. 10 feet is not close for me, I like to get right on top of them and follow it up. I use a ruger mark 2 and hand feed the cartriges. They work great for rats too, with little colateral damage, unlike the .410 you can use them in your garage or around the house.

We had a dry fall and I was able to clear some low lying areas that I normally can't get the tractor in. I encountered numerous cotton mouths. I have settled on H&R Snake Tamer. Its a survival style single shot .410. It has slots for four extra shells and is short enough that it can be carried easily on the tractor. I plan to load it with 8 shot. I actually stopped at Bass Pro to buy one about a month ago but they were out of stock.

jay4200: Your friend should have returned the Judge, I bought one and discovered a wear ring around the cylinder, contacted Taurus, they sent shipping label, repaired and returned the pistol promptly. I personally can't imagine a better tool for snakes and larger varmits than a Taurus Judge with a 6" barrel. Winchester now makes a .410 round especially for the Judge, called the PDX1, consisting of three copper clad discs that are spun by the rifleling for a tight group, backed up by 12 copper clad BB's. This is a deadly load for varmits of all sizes, even the two legged types. The PDX1 .410 round makes experts out of folks who don't get to shoot a lot. I recently shot at one of the black pistol targets that show a yellow spot when hit, the .410 shell turned most of the target yellow. There are countless videos on U-Tube showing the Judge in action, the watermelon shots are particularly descriptive.

I am going to start clearing a few acres this spring...mostly scrub pine on a hill that was pasture 30 years ago. I am hoping not to encounter too many legless creatures, however, the occasional rattler and copperhead have been spotted.

What kinds of snake loads do you guys carry? I prefer to avoid any close combat...:D

I don't shoot too many snakes in PA but once there was a big black snake high up in the trees I shot with my 410 10 Inch barrel T/C Contender and I never knew there was so much blood that could come raining down. Dropped immediately.
This makes and excellant tractor firearm but is only a single shot so make it count!

All you need is a .45 ACP, a good eye, and a steady hand for almost any unwanted guest on you property :D

Does your .410 T/C have the external choke or the internal? Mine has the internal. The choke is supposed to stop the spinning of the wad due to the 45 Long Colt rifling.

T/C also made a .357 barrel with a choke for their specially made .357 T/C shot loads. The round looked almost like a .410 in length but a long plastic tube is sticking out the .357 case. I'll have to search around to see if I have any more of them.

Both of them can be reloaded before the varmint gets too far. But with the spread of the shot it usually isn't necessary.

Having a shot-out barrel will at least double that 10 feet :)

CCI 9mm wouldn't cycle my Hi-Power but fed fine manualy, believe with a lighter recoil spring I could have solved the cycle problem but the rats went away so quit carrying it.

Take a look at the AMT Snake Charmer. It's sort of a very small, light, short barreled .410 that is deadly on snakes with #6 shot. Mine is stainless steel, helps to prevent rust since you will be carrying it on the tractor. Best thing would be to come up with a scabbard to carry it in, much like you would carry a rifle while riding on a horse. It has a compartment in the stock that will hold 4 extra shells.

Dont want to turn this into a gun thread but... I have NEVER had any BAD luck with returning guns to the factory.. I have sent several back-from different Manufactures-- and all where really good on fixing the problem and fixing it right.. Ruger is the one that really fixed a vaquero I sent back and WOW it is really a good shooter now. I cant say that about to many other equipment manufactures..
