Yesterday on one of the National Geographic channels they were running a series about the intelligence of animals. "Genius of Dogs," "Genius of Pigeons," etc.
There was a show called "Genius of Pigs!"
It really was interesting. :laughing: The show talked about how close Humans and Pigs are genetically and anatomically. Breeding, Hogzilla, skulls, and of course intelligence. :thumbsup:
The series is interesting and I am sure Oscar would like to watch.... :laughing:

I think the dogs have us beat in the brain department...
I did not see all of the program about dogs but what I did see I had seen in other shows and it still amazes me. A dog will generally look at where a person points. They GET that the point means to look over there. A chimp will NOT do this. Dogs can even pick up that a person is "pointing" with their eyes. They showed some demonstrations of this on the show.
The one that was funny was the dog was told to NOT eat something on the floor. But then the tester closed her eyes. The dog hemmed and hawed about eating the food but eventually ate.
The dog knew it was NOT supposed to eat but the dog also knew that the person was not watching. So the doggy went ahead and ate. :laughing::laughing:Think about that. The dog knew that the eyes see. And if the eyes are closed you cannot see. Thus the Two Legged Critter said do not eat but her eyes are closed so I can get away with it....

I have all ways heard that pigs waller in the mud to stay cool. Like a large dog digging a hole in the dirt to lay in.

I've heard that too, but I have pictures of Oscar playing in the mud along the shoreline of Lake Marabou when it was 24 degrees out. I know he wasn't trying to cool off!!!!
The picture of him in the mud that I just posted was at 60 degrees. Still not what I'd consider warm.
When he it was warmer out, he would fall asleep out in the sun.
I dont have a clue why he rolls around in the mud other then a very strong desire to do so because he just loves it.

Pigs do have sweat glands but they do not function like a human's does. They can release a little water and heat through passive diffusion, but it is not enough for the pigs to rely on. So in order to combat heat, pigs have adapted by using behavioural thermoregulation, which is the act of cooling themselves in the mud or water.
They do not sweat to cool off, that thick hide and excess body weight even in a cool temp with hot sunlight they may be just trying to cool down... especially in 60 degrees.

Oscar needs a playmate. I live near Chapel Hill, and recently put out a make-shift feeder and game camera. This sow and her 6 little ones have been coming by for a few days. She tangled with something pretty mean and got scratched up from the previous day. You can have the pick of the litter if you can catch him!!
