This oil thing...

If only we had more time! Maybe we could have done something! Maybe we could have reduced our dependence on oil. But I guess there's just nothing you can do when you've only got 40 years warning...

The gas I use in my car dropped a couple weeks ago by 25 cents/gallon to $1.02. I filled up today, about 200 miles worth, for under $6. Natural Gas is the way to go here. I just smile now when I pass a gas station charging $3.50/gallon. Doesn't help with diesel for the machine, but the neighbor picks up the fuel for me for clearing his drive and the road out. So other than the price of eggs, I'm mostly immune to the price spikes. When I first got the car, gas was over $4 and I was paying 67 cents/gallon equivalent for CNG. We need to put more money into building our alternative fuel infrastructure instead of putting money into fighting unwinnable wars in the Middle East.

At the rate fuel is at now, Some day i will look back and think wow, fuel sure was cheap at $4 a gallon for Diesel. :(

Much the way I look back at $.23 gas when I was learning to drive....

I find it totally incredulous that Libya controls the equivalent of 20% of the world oil market, such that taking them off the market with their current civil war would result in a 20% increase in American fuel prices.
.

You really need to investigate the dynamics of supply and demand. If we lose 20% of our fuel supply, the price will be up 500% to 1000%. Remember when Katrina shut down the gulf for a short time and disrupted 3% of the supply? Price was nearly 5 bucks a gallon for diesel. The mid-east goes to the muslim brotherhood and we can see a horrid global recession that will make the "Great Depression" look like a wild frat party.

Gas prices are mostly based on speculation and greed, rather than actual availability.

On the flip side, buying tractors with diesel engines is probably the best bet in the long run as those engines can run on a wider variety of fuels than a gasoline one.

Libya controls more like 2% of the oil market.

If Saudi Arabia goes unstable, we are in for a real treat.

What I read today and from watching the news, there still is a good supply right now, so pretty much "speculation" that the Libya thing will escalate, cutting off their oil supply.

I really don't see any other possibility than greed, OK, so Libya goes nuts and cuts of their oil, the whole 2-3%!! as the "speculators" are "speculating", We shouldn't feel the 2-3% here. That 2-3% is for "total world supply". Seems we may be able to open our fields in the gulf to make up the actual difference.

BUT, if the Saudis loose control, we are in deep manure..

Not sure, I'm just "speculating" out loud.

We get our electric power through a rural electrical coop that buys power from TVA. The last coop newsletter warned that TVA is switching to demand based pricing for electricity.

So unless we want to sit home with no power, we're going to get it both ways here in middle TN on fuel and electricity.

If you think this is the answer big scale you are dreaming. They will just raise the prices on it also. Big oil and the speculators will work there way into the CNG thing when it takes off and it will be the same old story.

It works on small scale like you and very few others are using but gas and diesel still power 99.99% of the vehicles running. As soon as that starts to change we will be paying out the wazoo for CNG and NG to heat our homes.

There is no good answer. Someone will always make money off of fuel in one form or another.

i own a gas station in western md...diesel here is 3.69 and gas is 309......and yep the oil companies are making the BIG MONEY! so are the the big truck stops on diesel. us lil guys are lucky to make a nickel a gallon. plus credit card fees are crazy ! visa charges the store about 3% of the purchase plus a 35 cent card swipe fee! the big oil companies and the credit card companies are doing great! we all need to stop buying fuel for 3 days and then you would see a drop! i think ?

Maybe you should look into "Square" I don't know if they could help with your whole business or not? It is an app for smart phoness and Ipads. They charge 2.75% and they just got rid of the swipe fee! I use it for my business all the time.... Maybe it will bell you??
