First new gun!

I bought myself a new revolver! I've owned other guns before, but they've all been used. This is the first "virgin" firearm I've ever owned. It's a brand spanking new Taurus model 66 .357 mag, 6" barrel, stainless steel, 7 shot. Just got it home tonight and gave it a thorough cleaning to remove all the manufacturing gunk. I'll get to fire it this weekend. No time at the moment. The trigger assembly feels pretty good for being fresh from the factory (better than my friend's GP100) and it should loosen up after a couple hundred rounds or so. We're planning on loading some light to medium loads for the break-in period.

Can't wait for the weekend!

Yah, I'm partial to wheel guns too. I have an MP9, but if I really want to hit what I'm shooting at instead of just spraying bullets around, I shoot my 686, 6" barrel, very similar to your Taurus. I'm thinking of getting a laser for the MP9 in hopes of improving my accuracy with it. Even so, there's nothing like shooting a revolver single action. The trigger break is feather light, and the long sight plane puts the bullet right on target.

You've got a pretty long barrel on the gun (which wil help with recoil). Are you intending to hunt with it?

I plan on carrying it around the farm, out in the woods, etc. Knowing the kinds of critters we can get up here in the north woods, I feel a little more at ease with a bit of protection. Our farm is also a 5 min. walk from the Canadian border (all woods and swamp) and the occasional drug dealer has been know to sneak across at this point, so a little protection/deterrence from the two-legged critter is also desirable. Of course, there's always the occasional smaller varmint that can pose as a nuisance/target.

I bought an Uncle Mike's vertical shoulder holster to go with it, so it will ride with me on the tractor or 4-wheeler without getting in the way.

As far as the long barrel goes, I'm willing to take a little shot in carrying comfort for better shooting comfort; plus, it gives me a longer sight plane to aim with. I lug heavy windows around all day at work, plus I chuck a lot of fire wood at home, so I'm in pretty good shape. I should be able to handle carrying a 40 oz. revolver for a few hours a day.

I guess you know this, but do not under any circumstance, cross the border to Canada. You would be in a World of ****!!!!!!
The Canadian government and laws are quite strict on firearms and especially handguns. Probably not as bad as Mexico, but most deinitely severe.

Roger that, Roy! We're well aware of the implications of crossing illegally, especially with a firearm. That being said, it's absolutely impossible to cross unaware. There is a 20 ft. rift cut through the trees along the entire border, so it's well marked.

My wife remembers when times were more relaxed and so were the laws. People used to cross all the time by foot and visit. Her father was a preacher who cross country skied across the border from the very same farm to preach at a little church in Canada. Those times are long gone.
