It would be nice to have something to replace the moisture finicky 7018 for those of us that don't have rod ovens, but like the strength and versatility of 7018.

That sounds like a great all round rod, especially for us farm boys. :D

From what little I can find out about it, the ones that have used it thinks it's great. But I wonder why it's not more commonly known?

And if it was marketed as a strong 6013, then wouldn't it be a shallow penetrating rod and shouldn't be used on thicker stuff?

Yep, Easy Strike was an MG 6013 rod too. It had a coated tip for an " Easy Strike "..MG makes about 1/2 of all the fancy *** rods out there. Stoody makes about 2/3 of the hard surface rods no matter what label they put on them..I typed in 13 brands and removed them prior to posting this. Glad I did.

How are they priced to 7018, and can they be used for the root pass?

I paid $30.29 for ten pounds of 80t AC+, on March 14th, I paid $29.12 for ten pounds of 7018 on Feb 3rd. As far as the root pass goes, I myself will use 6010 for now, until I hear different. The 80t AC+ is advertised at 80,000 # but 6010 is tried, and true.

80 ksi seems like overkill when the base metal is 36 ksi but if you like the rod i'd use it. I have a bunch of 80 and 100 ksi rods I use. You find cans of them at garage sales around here because we use most of the worlds HY80 and HY100 plate on boats. I never could figure out why welding steel plate in the shape of a boat makes it float. Or why welding rolled plate, in the shape of a long cigar tube makes it sink sometimes and sometimes not and how does it know.

I couldn't figure out how to weld a bead, and take a picture at the same time. I could have taken a picture of the rod, but it is a welding rod that is blue, I figured your imagination would have filled in the gaps. I could have taken a picture of a weld bead, but envision a crappy weld bead, that is a little less crappy, and there you have it.

Welp, maybe if you posted some pictures of your welds the more experienced weldors here could help you improve.

have you used them, and from what I've seen of your projects, what do you think of their rods for the novice or experienced welder?

No, I haven't used them, as I just came across them on my searches. I am planning on trying them out.
