Re: 2320: drive shaft from engine to hydro motor just snapped off !!!

OK, so what does "dragging" in tail. Obviously a 3 point PTO unit of some sort. Please post pics and detailed explanations. Something smells Fishy

Hi Guys,
Wanted to share a sad day yesterday....While I was dragging my horse riding ring last night (VERY low stress on the tractor) I heard this weird sound underneath the machine. Turned it off and looked underneath....saw nothing weird. Started it back up and BANG....I shut it down immediately and looked underneath again. And the drive shaft spline is laying on the ground....completely sheared off. OMG! :(:(:(

Plus I am 6 months out of warranty.

I pulled the tractor out of the riding ring with my truck and now it sits waiting for my tractor mechanic friend to come and look at it......but I have a bad feeling about this.

I am going to have my mechanic friend look at it, but I also need to talk with the dealer and see if there is anything they can do about this very premature drive train failure.

Took some pictures and you can see that it completing sheared off. The u-joint is destroyed too.... The shaft that sheared in half is part 52 in the picture from JDPARTS.

I have done some searching and haven't found anyone report this type of failure.

'Dragging' means to pull a drag ....... a device to flatten out a riding ring or other area. Picture pulling a piece of chain link fence or a few old tires bolted together .... on the end of a chain or cable. Generally pretty low stress as far as tractor work goes.

Any word yet from the dealer? We are all patiently waiting to see how they handle this. I hope it all works out in your favor.

Wow, sorry this happened to you, it doesn't look cheap. This is pitiful that a u-joint would crap out in 2.5 years. The rust & wear angles makes it look like it was wearing from early on. That is one tough spot to monitor a u-joint. You might notice it going bad on level ground in neutral but you'd have to be able to reach in there to move it every which way. My Kubota is almost 30 years old and last I looked the u-joints were still solid.

Just heard from the dealer this morning.

They said the cost is $4,030. (Yes I fell out of my chair) That is 25% of a brand-new machine!!

They said they talked with John Deere and they will fix it for $1,952. (Parts alone are 1200+ they said) That is still absurd in my mind as this is 5 months out of warranty.

They said "cause of failure = lack of grease". They said, "Don't really know why that is and what would cause lack of grease".

I said I don't want to go forward with the fix.....they said they will continue to talk to John Deere and will call me Monday.

This doesn't look pretty :(

Yikes. If they fix it or you fix it be sure the new U-joints have zerks. I would bring up the fact that there were no zerks. Best of luck to you Bill.

Did you follow the manual's maintenance instructions for greasing? Were those U-Joints illustrated in the manual as grease points?
Those are rhetorical questions (I've been following this thread), but I'm curious about Deere's responses.

My owners manual DOES NOT mention greasing said U-joint, PERIOD! This really needs to be addressed with John Deere.
