and not the belly-mounted mower?

What are the benefits to going with the rear-mounted ones? some people seem to choose the rear mounts ...just wondering why?

ground clearance when using other attachments
no mid pto - too expensive to add later
initial cost
you can back a rear mount mower into places a belly mower can't go

that's just a few

The belly mower interfers with a lot of tasks when you're not mowing. The rear finish mower also is a lot easier to drop then the belly mower.

In my case, RFM cost less, easier to take on and off. I would look at MMM if it was dedicated mower. I would not want to use FEL and MMM at same time. MMM could be easily damaged if doing any other heavy tractor work. Philip.

With belly mount mowers you usually have to drive over them or if you have room slide them under to mount. 3 pt. mowers are a lot easier to attach and detach.
In my area people that own tractors for estate mowing usually go with belly mount and just leave it mounted all the time. Its really a matter of choice. I don't know if there is a cost difference but I would think a belly mower costs more than a 3 pt.

If you have any amount of trees or buildings to cut around, you know what I'm saying. I have had both. A field or open lawn, a RFM is the way to go. Obstacles? A MMM. A RFM is absolutely easier to take off, but is near impossible to use easily around any large quantities of trees.

RFM = easier, faster to put on and remove. Rear discharge makes no windrows. :)

MMM = works with collection system. I want one...... I hate raking !! :(

Not sure what the correct term is, but do rear mounted mowers "track" well when going up and down hills? How much can they "hug" the ground?

I'll agree with others and say it boils down to ease of installing/removing the mower deck. It all comes down to how often you will be installing/removing the deck to do other tasks. If the answer is once or twice a year, I might consider the belly mower. Any more than that, and I'd go with a rear finish mower.

They are ground contact with swivel hook up with quite a bit of play, so they stay on the ground unless you get really extreme.

As a ground contact mower as opposed to a suspended deck on some MMM, you will get more tracks or whatever you call it in the ground if it is a little damp.

We use both types and for lawns prefer MMM with the RFM preferred for fields or big open areas.

Until you get use to it, you will find the RFM more difficult to maneuver around obstacles, but it can be done. I grew up farming and can't seem to break the habit of looking back, so for me a RFM was a bit more tiring until I started using cabs with mirrors, still HAVE to look back occasionally though.

I have found the idea solution to be more than one tractor.
