It's nothing more than hype to sell to the grocery getters and the guys that need a truck to go to Home Depot for some light bulbs and a gallon of paint.

Here's the real story about your wonderful V8 beating turbo V6.

Yep. Truth is many (most?) owners of sport utilities and pickups dont need them or could get by with a smaller unit. Be it a compact truck (those dont exist in NA anymore) or car.. For the odd sheet of drywall or gallon of paint you dont need a full 8' bed. Heck a car and light trailer would be better for the other 364 days a year. But hey, its about image right?

My compact Tacoma gets worked harder then half the F-150's out there.

Gotta love the Aussies. Second Best commercial for a truck ever? http://www.toyota.com.au/toyota-tv?v=JIxSZ63VxUvvhnXmHCE49RJuPNUPdgi4 Border patrol. "We got tofu here!" Could be filmed in a HD parking lot.

Why do you have to be such a hater? Nothing fake about it. Ford had another one on the 5.0L the other day showing the technology put into it. Variable cams are pretty cool.

I clearly stated I had a feeling it would be nothing more than a infomercial put on by Ford and that what it was. I would love to see the sales numbers for next week. Just like NASCAR. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.

You are right, it was just the test that have been on YouTube for a couple months now but it sure stomped the heck out of the GM and Dodge trucks in the trailer pulling competition:thumbsup:

Chris

Looks like Dmace is over-dosing on the "Hater Tots" again.

Yes, for a lot of people...they don't NEED the 8 foot bed more than a few times a year, and for the limited number of times they do, it would make a lot more sense just to rent the trucks available at Menards, etc. for hourly rentals. What ticks me off though, is that although I would rather use our Saturn L-300 or Buick Lesabre to pull my 750 pound aluminum open utility trailer, the automakers only rate such cars to pull 1000 pounds. INANE. Four 60 pound bags of redi-mix crete in the trailer, and the tow capacity has been reached. I haul a LOT of materials, scrap metal, junk, etc so I need to use my 8000 pound tow capacity GMC to pull my trailer. I'd rather use one of the cars because they get 2X the gas mileage. Frickin' inane.

But hey, its about image right?

Like wimmen, cars get attention with their LOOKS. As we say here in Dutch Country, "Kissin' don't last, cookin' does!"

The old step-side pickup, with the 5 foot bed was built for work, and nothin' else! (But the kind of gal who'd agree to ride in one was the kind of gal you'd want for the "long haul").

That's me, sort of. I burn wood as my primary heat source, but only need that hauling capacity maybe once or twice a quarter on average. I need a little econobox for a daily driver and a 3/4t pickup with a tandem axle trailer parked behind the barn for wooding. Unfortunately, since I don't have the money for both, I compromise. I make do with a half ton pickup and a 5x8 3500lb single axle trailer. What irks me is the 3/4 t diesel would get better gas mileage than the 14-15 hwy I'm getting with the little 4.6L.

Crazy low ratings. My Volvo V90 has a rating of ~3000# with brakes and 1000# without.

I think part of the low tow rating on cars today is because the cooling systems have been downsized so much. I owned an '86 GM car with the same 3.8 V6 my '04 Lesabre has. The cooling system on the older model held SEVENTEEN quarts and the newer car is EIGHT quarts, and about half a gallon of that 8 quarts is simply to keep the recovery tank half full. Sure, cutting the coolant capacity in half saved 17 pounds of coolant plus the smaller radiator weighs less...I have put as much as 900 pounds in the trailer when hitched to the Buick, but I don't do that during hot weather.

My 03 F350 4x4 dually crew is paid for...
With 93K miles and the 7.3 I'm in no hurry to trade...
14 mpg empty and 10-11 mpg towing...
Running an 80 HP program so she is putting out 330 HP and 625 lb-ft of torque...
Aggravating to park but has been very reliable...
Very safe too...

My son has a similar 03 truck that I borrowed for a trip from Vancouver to Calgary and back. His programmer is set for 350hp and 750ft.lbs. I very carefully tracked the mileage to 23.9mpg (Imperial). Deduct 10% for the different gallon and yours may still have some extra economy to be found.

Sure, I don't NEED my F350 4x4 Crew Cab 8' bed. But it sure is cool. I don't even try to justify it, unless I'm actually doing something at the moment where it's handy.
I also don't NEED my BX tractor or various attachments.
I also don't NEED my house, on a few acres.
I also don't NEED my welder, press, drill press, table saw, etc.

We all spend money on some things that others think are silly.
Some people own boats. To me, they're a money pit - but to others, owning a boat is important. I don't begrudge them that.
Just don't spend money on luxury A and then complain you don't have money for luxury B.

Sure, there are times when one is in a life situation where there is no such thing as a luxury - unless you smoke, drink, or spend money on any other mundane thing that isn't necessary.
