The 261 is another new model to replace the 260.

As a die hard Stihl user ( 5 saws, 3 weed eaters and a polesaw ) I have to agree that the flip caps are less than perfect. My Only issue with them is that they hold dirt and dust. When you can't blow them off with the compressor, You do have a chance of getting dust and dirt particles in your fuel and oil. Stihl needs to ditch the flip caps and come up with a replacement for those who have flip cap crank cases asap.. Oh, I only have 2 with the flip caps and thats enough.

It has to be kind of embarassing for a company like Stihl, known for quality products and with a loyal following, to come out with "the next BIG thing" only to have it turn out to be a complete flop.

At least it sounds like they have the integrity to admit they screwed up and are starting to phase them out. Even so, you would think they could have seen that this was a bad idea before they ever released it, if they would have just done a little test marketing (or even just tried actually using one themselves).

Heck, I've waited this long to buy a bigger saw, maybe I'll just give them awhile longer until the non-flippy-cap model is available in my area....

I don't own a Stihl but was looking through a catalog the other day. I noticed that they had 4 new chainsaw models listed and none of them had the flipy caps.

Which one's? I only know of the MS660 :thumbsup::thumbsup::D

You saying the 261 has regular caps? :confused:

I've known about the 261 and others new models before they hit the dealers. ;)

Nope didn't read the post close enough. I don't know which style cap the 261 has. I wanted to look at a 261 in Feb when I bought a 260 but checked three dealers and none knew when they would get a 261.

I may not have spoken correctly. I looked at the catalog again, which I just picked up from the local hardware store, and noticed a few things.

1) It may not be the newest catalog because I found a 2009 date on the back cover.

2) MS311, MS391, MS362, and MS362 c-q are listed as new models and all of the orange standard option dots (including flippy caps) are black on these 4 models only. I just looked and there is no reference to what a black dot means.

Maybe at the time this catalog was printed they weren't sure about the options so they just printed them black, like to be determined.

Talked to a stihl trouble shooter today, he said take in the cap to your dealer with the SN and you will get a replacement cap free of charge

Do you know if this goes for any Stihl saw with the flip cap?

Could you get a pic of replacement cap or a technical bulletin please.

Thanks. :thumbsup:
