New Powerarc 200

Rjmack,

All weldOrs find a machine they excel on. And find others that give them fits, until some practice or instruction. I have seen guys FAIL tests on a XMT, repeatedly and then walk over to a dial arc and pass on the first try. XMT's are good. I've put a lot of time on them, but I prefer an lincoln engine drive over any I have ever used. The PA welds more like them to me that the XMT. Arc length seems to be key, and the PA may not be as forgiving in that respect. The XMT's can't be rivaled for popularity and capability, but the PowerArc isn't designed for MIG either. lol IF you want a machine like that, the new MTS 400 will be the best bet. It has adjustable arc force control. I have run 3/32 5P roots with it at 55 amps and about 20% setting on arc force. 7018 is smooth with just a hint of arc force needed.

SA,
There are welders, like the little maxstars that just won't cut it with 6010, and the small transformers that won't as well, at least not the 225/125 units I have used.

Sorry about trying to give a professional pipe weldor advice on how to weld pipe

no need, and no worries:) far as forgetting things, i tend to forget more today than i did yesterday.

far as the xmt, they are a very good machine. seems like you may be developing some hoarding issues though.:D

then again, there's always the old saying 'you can never have too many welding machines'.:licking::laughing:

Arc length seems to be key, and the PA may not be as forgiving in that respect.

i agree, the pa200 behaves similar to an s/a 200 with carbon buildup on the armature. it is very susceptible to arc length changes and will cut out altogether with very little prompting. it just doesn't seem to have the punch it should. wish i knew more about volt/amp curves to describe it better.

Rjmack.

I think I know your problem. We have had a few clamps and electrode holders that somehow oxidize just enough to make a suspect connection. Change them out to a newer one or if you have some leads near buy just plug them in.

The units really weld well in my opinion without the carbon buildup. I don't think there'd be anything wrong in particular, because we haven't had any failures other than the connections/clamps.

It could just be that Canadian air up there.lol

rjmack do you have any experience with Lincoln's Invertec V350-Pro?

i was going to get some dinse connectors and longer leads anyway, i'm not holding my breath, but i'll see what happens. seems to run lo hy okay.

i don't think so. in the field we either use miller or lincoln, mostly miller inverters in 6 or 8 pack configuration, or diesel portables... mostly lincoln but some miller too.

i ran a miller diesel on my own rig during the '90's, and generally miller buzz boxes on 480v and whatever portables were supplied before that.

are you thinking of buying one?

Always thinking ahead. I have a Linde VI-206 Mig machine, I was warned that parts are getting harder and harder to track down. Not that I've had any problems with it, just thinking ahead. Ah who am I kidding I might buy one or the XMT-350 if the mood strikes me.

sure wish i understood mig. i have a miller 252, and i know what is doable with mig, but i have never been able to crack that nut.

it took me 3 years to notice the volt/wire speed chart on the machine:confused:

not that it did me much good when i did.:D

Ah come on now! I'm not buying that at all! Anybody who can control / make the puddle do what ever they want with SMAW, can surely do it with GMAW!

You wanna run that by me one more time?

I have the XMT350MPa and have no complaints. it stick welds like a dream. the pulsed spray is pretty awesome too, much easier to handle than normal spray. I have not done any tig with it, i have a TA185 that i use for that and have not run into anything ive needed the extra power to tig yet.

I'm running an old feeder, id like to get one of the synergistic ones for pulse to see how much of a difference that makes, but ive been unwilling to spend the $$ on a new feeder yet.
