That's a fair number of hours on the engine! I've got about that many hours myself -- and I hack and cough white goo in the morning at "fire up", too!! :laughing:

'Course my wife knows by now it's just "blow-by" and she doesn't pay much attention...

Keeps right on workin' me!!!

A quart of oil every 15 hours is a fair bit of oil to be burnin', too! IMO - it's likely gettin' time to be saving up for an overhaul kit.

Sure wished all I needed was a new set of pistons and liners....

One way to be sure is to take an oil analysis. Also sitting that long some antifreeze could have leaked in to the crankcase and it is evaporating. One thing I know for sure is that if you are getting a creamed coffee color gel like goo in the breather tube it is antifreeze.:thumbsup:

so is it possible to not have antifreeze in the oilpan and still have a bad headgasket? i dont seem to be going through coolant. the engine does not overheat either. i always thought a blown gasket resulted in overheating.

A blown head gasket doesn't always cause an over heat problem, seen lots that have caused and over cooling condition/won't reach normal operating temp from the compression getting into the cooling system.
If you think you have a blown head gasket, go to NAPA or an auto parts store and ask for something to check for combustion in the cooling system.
One last thing, what kind of oil was used in the engine before you got it?

Price out a new set of liners and you will decide to run it as is very quickly.

All the liners are mounted to a deckplate, was over $800 a few years ago.

Yep know what you mean, been working around diesel engine for 35 yrs. Get to see the insides of them every day if I want too. If it's not using coolant then it's condensation, using coolant with no external leaks, then it's ether going out the exhaust or when it get bad enough, it ends up in the oil. When you start with engines using egr coolers & cooled turbo's, then you got a few more things to look at.

West, since the original brand & weight of oil is unknown, maybe it don't like the 10w30, maybe try a 15w40 or even a 20w50 weight since it's a gas engine.
I wouldn't condemn the head gasket just yet. Keep an eye on the coolant level.
As for the oil consumption, it's a good possibly it's still with in the OEM spec for oil usage. If I remember right, the old IH gas V*8 engines anything less then about 350 miles to a quart was considered excessive and on cat diesel engines, usually a quart of oil to 50 gal or less of fuel burned is excessive. Get into the super big engines and it gallons per hour.
That engine might have a lot more hours left before it needs overhauled.

Here is a couple of pics of out irrigation engine this morning. No PCV valve. Breather tubes are straight from the valve covers. It uses very, very little oil and NO water. Pure condensation.
