I'll be the first to admit I put my two year old on my lap quite often and give him a tractor ride around the house. I even extended the seatbelt around him and did a little box blading with him last week.

But I see and read stories everyday where people are killed in car crashes yet I keep putting my kids in the car and driving them around. Accidents happen and if one happens on my tractor so be it but I'm not going to paralyze myself with fear. What's that old saying? A life lived without risks is a life not worth living.

I take the risk of putting my son on my lap on yhe tractor a **** of a lot easier than I do putting him in the car and driving around with all of you. :)7

These are the comments that get everyone stirred up and P*****d Off

Huh??? Did you quote the wrong post??? The person stated their opinion! They said nothing about what you or anyone else should do, think , or say. If someone wants to state their opinion that does not agree with me then please do! This is a free country.

Now let me p*** everyone off too. I don't like plain cheese! It has to be with tomato sauce for me to like it.

For what's it's worth, I found that 167 deaths occurred amoung children aged less than or equal to 5 years old caused by agricultural machinery from 1990-1995 based on the CDC's Health Statistics mortality data. Roughly 28 children a year. While this is tragic, it pales in comparison to other dangers.

Deaths Among Children Aged Less Than or Equal to 5 Years from Farm Machinery Runovers -- Iowa, Kentucky, and Wisconsin, 1995-1998, and United States, 1990-1995

Not an apples to apples comparison but in the U.S. age 0-19

12,175 children die from injurys annually
7,317 are motor vehicle traffic related
1,150 drown
956 suffocate
606 form poisoning
592 from burns
187 from falls

CDC - Childhood Injury Report

The point is, there is danger everywhere and we all need to manage it the best we can while still living and learning - and I emphasize learning. Most drownings can be prevented by teaching a kid to swim. Most auto accidents can be prevented by slowing down and leaving some space in front of you (I said most not all). Many burns can be prevented by education about fire at a young age and education on what to do in the event of a house or building fire etc, etc.

I HATE reading these stories. I'm sure no one on these boards would do something so stupid as give a toddler a ride while mowing or brush hogging. I've been on TBN about 8 years and I have read enough of these, and when this article showed up on my interenet "home page" it knocked the wind out of me. I have a 4 year old Grandson. Please people, never give a kid (or anyone else) a ride on a tractor. Especially while working! Neighbor says no one can be blamed, I'm sorry but I disagree. I"ll bet grandma's boyfreind, will have a hard time not blaming himself. My prayers go out to him and the family.

Don't be too sure until you have read EVERY thread here (I haven't).

We have PICTURES here on TBN of "Oh, so proud" owners with toddlers balanced on their knee while driving the tractor.
It is a_NOTHER one of those - "I know what I'm doing so I'm safe, but others shouldn't do this because it would be unsafe if they lack my experience" things.

and Yes, I have hoisted grand kids up in the bucket to give 'em a little thrill, so I'm no BETTER in this regard, but I have been LUCKY to not hurt anyone.

I only feel safe when I am RIDING on the tractor while bushhogging, if I am standing ON THE BUSHHOG DECK.

My wifes grandfather fell off his tractor and was run over by the back wheel - TWICE!

I guess we shouldn't let old people use tractors, either.

Now, what constitutes too old? too young?

I used to install carpet when my kids were quite young (remember, I have 4 girls) and all my kids have gone with me when I was doing this full time. As a carpet layer, I used a razor knife that holds a double-edged blade that cannot be retracted. I used an iron that gets hot enough to burn paper. I used several other tools that could inflict bodily harm.

All my kids would re-load my knife with blades and get the iron ready.

They would help get the tools out and put them away. They would even help me roll out a room of carpet that was heavy enough to do bodily harm if it fell on you.

I was sooooooooooo bad letting them be with their Dad ... the possible harm that could have come to them still haunts them. that is why they still go places with me and do things with me.

I may have you beat, my kids learned to ride a motorcycle at the age of five on a 50cc Italajet, we still have it, a collectors item. They all also learned to shoot. My first son I cut down a rifle and the next two I bought a Chipmunk and an Anschutz. I worked in the woods with them and taught them to drive my truck to get it out of the way as soon as they could reach the pedals and to drive a tractor when I felt they were mature enough, probably about eleven or twelve, I forget. My sons used an ax, machete and later chain saw as soon as I felt they could.

Both of my sons got broken bones from sports, but were never injured while working with me.

I make no judgments on how others raise/raised their children, but I believe I raised mine safely and responsibly. In many instances it is not what you do, but how you do it.

I have learned that age is often an indicator of very little as some are responsible and safe while others are not, mine were or I would not have proceeded as I did.

I realize this may be a bit off topic.
