It's funny half of all the manuals for tractors are safety related items and taking a passenger is always one listed as a not to do. Now the funny part, almost all the manufactures adds and brochures have a shot of a tractor with a passenger on them. The LS web site has a picture of a guy and his girl or wife on the machine with him in the shots of a U5030. huh

HS

I'll take your word on the LS website pic.
(EDITED) Saw the picture you added...that was pretty stupid of LS. Do their manuals recommend carrying two people too?
Here's a link to the LS website showing Scott's picture: http://www.lstractorusa.com/products/tractors/utility/utility-5020.html

I've never seen a manufacturer's advertising (print, TV or web) showing two people on a tractor. Gators and UTV, yes...but never on a machine designed for one person (typical tractor)...until that LS picture.

We're not talking about an injury that can be fixed with a band aid and a kiss to make the boo boo all better. Joy ride in the bucket of a FEL and risk being bounced out, run over, broken neck and be dead or spend the rest of the kids life in a wheel chair. Lose an arm or leg at a yearly age, every six months as the kid grows the device must grow too, a constant reminder. What about the kids social life, school, friends, aspirations? I don't know of any one legged Olympic class figure skaters. Life has tons of risk, why add to the list? Would you skate board on a freeway with 75 mph traffic?

Look at all the laws that have been passed because of stupid people.
Ride a bicycle - helmet.
Cell phone- not while driving
DWI law

toddler, young child is pushing it for me. when ya working the tractor. but a slow low first gear. and crank up throttle. it does give the child some respect for the machinery.

being down on the ground and on looking at someone is working a tractor. does not give ya justice. heck i yell at folks and chew them out when they get near me, while i am working the tractor. folks assume you see them.

seating on a lap gives some view point of respecting, and knowing were you should be.

everyone learns different, some folks more hands on while others writing it down and reading / asking questions. and a mix of it all.

every child / person is different. and it is up to the parent or person in charge to decide if the child should have a ride. and if it is safe or not. a short learning does not have to be painful to learn. it can be fun.

but there is a line. for me the line is when the tractor is being worked. mowing to other = a no no, and there needs to be a good flat area. so there is time to turn / stop move child around to get foot peddle or lever or something. to be able to stop quickly.

should it be done, all i can say it depends, with a good caution to NO and if need be always NO. but should it happen a once or twice, i say yes. pending on the child.

safety is not black and white. My kids work with me all the time and sometimes this means being on the tractor. I take every precaution to work safely with them and they have never gotten hurt while working with me. They frequently get hurt playing on swings, sleding, playing tag and doing all sorts of kid things.

For all those people who think a kid shouldn't be on a tractor, do you also think they shouldn't swing, sled, climb trees, ride in a car??? I'd love to see a risk analysis of these activities compared to riding the tractor with Dad. At least in my household, I already know that swings, sleds, and trees are all more dangerous than the car or the tractor. And the car is probably more dangerous than the tractor because although there have been no acidents there have been numerous near accidents with the kids in the car and never anything remotely close to an accident on the tractor.

When working with me they learn valuable skills and a good work ethic. My 5 yr old was a huge help when putting in a picket fence. She did all the back filling! And she caried rails (or drug them). I didn't ask her to do this, she would rather work with dad than play. When she was 3 I started teaching her to drive the zero turn and the loader. At 4 she looked like a seasoned pro on the zero turn (she does not mow, that is many, many years away). But once she is mature enough to fully understand and respect the mower, she will not have to learn to use it. She'll already know how.

She has tremedous respect of the machines already, understands what death is and is very cautious. She is not allowed within 50 feet of me when I'm operating any machine. If she wants my attention she has to get into my line of sight from 50+ feet away and wave. She does not approach until I shut the machine down. But then when she gets to me, I teach her, she rides with me and she learns. We do everything very, very slowly. This is valuable time for a father to spend with his kids. Not only do they get father time, but they learn a good work ethic and they learn skills so they wont be helpless like so many adults are today!

Wow, some people sure love to insult others! Living is a risk to your life. Everyone is different on what they deem acceptable. I can't believe people are asking others to commit suicide if one of their loved ones is killed in an accident they deem was "stupid." I'm sorry, but everyone's risk tolerance and cost/benefit ratio will be different for every situation. There are things I do that would probably be considered stupid by some, and other things I do a hard or long way that others would take a "hazzardous risk" to accomplish faster.
I read this forum because I look to learn by other's mistakes. I don't look to see other's insulting people. Hopefully a moderator will fix things.
Unfortunately I can't see this video. I am a "stupid" person that has operated a lawnmower with someone on my lap. I have yet to read of a child getting injured in the situation anywhere close to what I do though. I will look to see if the video works for me later. If I learn from an actual case that I'm doing something dangerous, I will look to correct what I'm doing.

Did you catch that line at the end: "This was just a freak of nature accident"???

Yeah, nothing anyone could have done to foresee this, or prevent it. :mur:

When Michael Jackson was dangling his newborn, off of that hotel balcony, had he dropped him, that apparently would have also been an unavoidable, "Freak of nature accident".

Many years ago, someone I know, backed up a lawn tractor not realizing a small child she was keeping an eye on, had run behind her. The child was trying to catch up to her, perhaps to get a ride. The end of the child's' foot went under the mowing deck as the woman backed over her.

The story did not have as tragic an out come as this one. But, the child spent a lot of time in the hospital, and lost some of her foot.

Though riding in someones lap did not directly cause this accident. It can easily cause a child to associate such dangers as time to have fun, rather than a time to be cautious, and stay clear.

If it feels good and it's fun, I do it. Dangerous? Even more fun...
