Well the other Bin Laden thread has been locked, I don't mind, I started it for selfish reasons, just wanted a popular current affairs thread. I really don't give a **** about OBL, if they never got him I would not of cared, I'm glad he's gone but in reality it doesn't change a thing.

I think the moderators showed great restraint in allowing that thread to go on for as long as it did. Lets not get this thread locked, but discussing ***** Bin Laden, dead or alive, is almost impossible without getting into politics and religion.

Bringing up WW2 in a discussion about the war on terror is pointless, the two are at the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum. I don't even consider fighting terrorism a war in the traditional sense. As long as there is one terrorist alive the "battle" will go on.

I think OBL deserves credit for showing us who the long term fundamental enemy of freedom is. they may be able to hit us again, but it wont be like the proverbially thief in the night. We now know what we are up against and will not have to ask who or why?

JB.

I guess the main result is that it has polarized the world and to which side you stand on. It has also polarized some on this board. I'm personally glad that he's gone. I did my own little happy dance. If this had happened in the opponents' arena, there would be a head on a stick at the NYC city limit sign.

Also, I just wanted to post before the thread got closed...

I don't believe there has been a single post that expressed anything but joy and approval with regard to the offing of OBL so I'm not seeing how the thread has polarized opinon regarding the original topic. As usual there are differences of opinion on peripheral issues but none on OBL's well earned demise.

I should have been more specific. It has exposed/polarized some on this board's political views. For better or for worse. I'm glad we prefer to focus on tractoring and the peripheral issues of living mostly rural livelihoods.

My FIL has worked in Yemen and has actually seen heads and hands on sticks outside a city's walls at the entry gate. Also, he has been car jacked in said country by men with Ak47's. I guess there aren't enough sticks over there.

The sad part of this is, there are several humans that if they were to die I'd feel glad.. The rush of happiness I felt (still feel) over the successful military operation on May 1st 2011 is also a reminder that thousands of small children are being brainwashed to hate us. The reason for the hate is not as important as the evil way they try to communicate their hatred... I hope we try to stay on the high road for the duration of this fight.

Someone said earlier that the ability of the enemy to suprise us in our ignorance is gone.. if they come, we know they're coming.

We can hope, but I'm not sure that will work. After all, according to most accounts that's not exactly how we got OBL.

Exactly, that's why I said the world owes OBL some credit. I hope this thought does not offend anyone. But they tipped their hand with 9/11.
If we just went on in our pre 9/11, bliss, they may of engineered a far more devastating attack, had they exercised more patience and planning.

They are coming, no doubt they are planning, there's no guarantee we will stop them. But it's going to be so much more difficult for them to go undetected, and carry out an attack with today's security.

I've heard it both ways.. 1: The info we got from prisoners using harsh treatment was heavy on lies... and..2: I've heard the good info was mostly due to waterboarding.. Me, I don't know the truth and really doubt I ever will.

Those that want to continue with questionable means will claim it was vital. War is dirty business, but there are rules for us right? no, not anymore.

However it was, thank God someone took it seriously enough to follow through.

Patton wanted to go ahead and squash Russia while the iron was on their soil. Took a long time to see he was right. How long was the cold war???

Somebody feel free to correct me if I am wrong. The Eastern Front had about 300 German divisions fighting about 300 Russian divisions. The Western Front had about 30 Allied divisions fighting about 30 German divisions.
The Russians had mostly T34/85s and JSU something or others with 120mm guns. The U.S. had at best, M4A3E8s with 76mm guns and a few M26 Pershings with 90mm guns.
How would Patton take on the Russian army and not lose? The Russians
always retreat fighting a defensive battle until their attacker is exhausted, then they counterattack and expel the enemy.

I suppose that no one could know for sure; but, I don't think Russia would have been capable of fighting a significant war without someone's help. I think that they lacked the industrial base to have defeated us long term; not to mention the challenge of feeding their people. Interesting prospective.:)

Sure, we probably could have beaten Russia at least back to 1939 borders but it would have cost us about a million casualtes.

The T34 was a much better tank than the Sherman and was available in larger numbers. Russia had massive artillary capability and something like four times as many soldiers in Europe. Our Air Force was better but the Russian AF would have inflicted serious damage to our ground troops before being beaten. Also we smashed Germany's war production anf fuel supplies but would have had a much harder time reaching Russian war factories already relocated east of the Urals. We also had the logistic challenge of feeding liberated Europe and continuing the Pacific campaign.

Patton was a fine general especially in armor tactics and battlefield leadership but he was a moron strategically as evidenced by his more balls than brains suggestions re Russia.
