Amsoil makes a 5W-30 engine oil rated for diesels but Shell doesn't list anything of that weight approved for diesels under its Rotella brand that I saw on their website. If the manual says to run something, that's probably good advice.

Around here, it never gets very cold, so cold weather isn't of significant concern. Having said that, I run 5W-40 synthetic Rotella in literally everything (a bunch of motorcycles of all flavors, ATVs, 9 tractors, a riding mower, walk behind tiller, and my personal vehicles) and have never had a problem. However, the plural of anecdote is not data, so do with that what you will.

The 5W40 is at my local Wal-Mart for around $20 a gallon. It's not as expensive as the smaller brand high performance oils, though. Since I do everything annually or more frequently, I could easily get away with 15W-40 for a few dollars less, but I have noticed that everything builds oil pressure more quickly with the 5W-40 vs the 15W-40; my stuff is expensive enough, and sits for long enough at a time, that it's worth it to me to build oil pressure faster rather than slower.

If Kioti recommends a 5W30, I assume they also sell that same oil at their dealers. Why not use that if you're in doubt?

Synthetic oils are not expensive when you look at the whole picture. For example I just picked up a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 today at Walmart for my boat. Takes 4.5 qts. It was $24.50. 5 qts of regular oil was $14 but you can easily go 2 times as long on synthetic without worries. This makes the cost of the oil changed about $30 with filter. If you were to do 2 conventional oil changes it would about $40. So no, synthetics are not expensive, they are cheaper in the long run.

By the way I just picked up 10 gallons of Rotella 5W40 Synthetic at Meyer about 2 weeks ago for my neighbor at $17.99 per gallon.

Chris

remember, you can go twice as long as long as "ITS OUT OF WARRANTY". if you try that while its still under warranty...your hosed. if you cannot backup your oil changes with receipts for scheduled oil changes, your warranty is voided.

i found out that the hard way on a truck i had. i used synthetic oil and extended my oil changes. had engine troubles and ford voided my warranty service.

Here in No. Idaho, the synthetic is runing over 2x the cost of standard...not sure why. I cant even find it in stock at the tractor supply and fuel depots. Very odd.
