I just got sawyers certificate from the USFS to do bucking and limbing; 2 day class. We covered a lot of stuff in those two days with safety the main topic. I bought a new pair of USFS approved chaps and helmet so I could comply with the new regulations. Chaps are not all the same as I found out in the class and the new ones must be labeled with Spec. 6170-4F. The head sawyer said he had just gone around and collected all the chaps at their work station and got rid of them and replaced them with the new spec chaps. Seem like a waste to get rid of chaps that were good but that is the way it is I guess. I now wear mine all the time after hearing the horror stories. The one rule I still break at home and the farm is cutting alone. I know I should not do but I do take extra care and time when alone.
I know. That is a tough one. It bothers me a little to be cutting alone, especially when the nearest neighbor is 3-4 miles away. I do keep my pistol with me most of the times in case I need to fire a series of 3 shots for help.
