1710 starter dead?

   / 1710 starter dead? #11
i just tried using the pickup battery and took the tractor battery completely out of the equation. same result. usually when my battery is no good i don't even get the click.
i have a repair manual but they seem to have skipped a starter trouble shoot section.

Randy and JC, I learned something new about a 1710 model, it uses a differant safety start switch. Doesn't have one on the clutch. It uses a magnetic switch under the transmission cover. My service manual FO44 stated main shift lever has to be in netural. Randy make sure the main shift lever is in netural. Thats the left one. If the right one (only) is in netural is does not activate the switch.
Randy what service manual do you have? Mine has some started and cylinoid chek info on page 56-57-and 58. If your book is the FO44 look there for info.

I'm afraid you might have a bad starter, the circuit for the solenoid and starter motor are different . You might have a bad motor winding and a good solenoid or the opposite. It is unlikely that both are bad. My suggestion is that you take the starter off the tractor and take it to any automotive box store and they do check it for you for free? if their test corroborated your finding then it time to look for a new source. I'd personally like to get in to it to see if I see obvious opens in the circuit, fried wires and stuff. They give you your core charge back if you put them back together.

Ray,

duly noted, but if you directly jump it with an alternate battery to starter terminal all safeties are by-passed. Randy was not able to get her to start by jumping it directly.

Good luck, guys, I have to leave the computer and this discussion to go grade my driveway. All this rain washed it out again. After that, it is mowing time, need to catch up with the grass too. Ray

JC,
the manual has several pages about taking apart the starter and checking its components.
from what i've seen online a replacement starter includes the solenoid.
thanks for your help.

Mine is a 1700 model I bought new in 1979. Have just under 1100 hours and never had any starter problems. I am on the 3rd or 4th battery.

Randy,

once you have the starter bench tested then it's time to decide. I have not priced the starter so I don't have a clue how much it runs. if it is cheap enough a replacement may be the easiest and safest bet. If expensive then you can open it up and if nothing else you can check the solenoid magnet winding, plunger and the motor winding for short, you can inspect the brushes and the contacts. it may be that the contacts are rusty or dirty. There is no solid state electronics in the older starters. If you could not fix it, then still it will maintain it's core value for replacement. If you decide to open it up then please take some pics for future reference for the rest of us.

not sure how you take pictures with greasy hands....i did take it apart and found nothing that looked burnt. so i put it back together and applied 12v off my charger and the starter turned. so then i mounted the solenoid back on and applied voltage and now it just hums. unfortunately when i unscrewed the nut from the stud that holds the cable that goes to the starter on the back of the solenoid the stud broke. ( one of the studs as shown in your pic jc). the other stud is not in such great shape either. i may take it over to the tractor dealer and have them look at it since its off the tractor anyway. i feel like its the solenoid thats the problem.

It is good that the starter spins. when you apply the voltage on the solenoid the coil will pick up and the plunger will be pushed out that causes the out put gear to engage with the flywheel. This action should then close the circuit by a contactor so you'll power up the motor to spin. it is curious why it did not turn when you directly powered it!! The humming might be an indication that the plunger is frozen in the sleeve due to rusting and indication the solenoid coil winding is still good.
