well for $50 I ordered a new solenoid. and yes to the mystery of why it would turn after i took it apart and reassembled. go figure. all the plunger actions seem to work and maybe i dislodged something when i took it apart. anyway, after i broke the stud on the solenoid i knew i was in for a new one anyway.

Well, a $50 learning opportunity, I have had things just that happen to me as well. On of those things:(

One possibility on why it worked after taking it apart and putting it back together is a worn or hung up brush.

Is the 1710 starter the same as the 1700 starter? Hitachi S12-62 is what is on mine. I took the starter number and the solenoid into the local NAPA and they dug out their "Wilson" book and matched it up and made a phone call and ordered one for me - $27+s/h (I'll look for the receipt and post the part number if anyone wants it). The local Hedahl's auto-parts store can get a rebuilt starter for $312. I had also checked the local New Holland dealer. $315 for the solenoid and $1,000 for the starter !!! Yikes !!!

Good find Neil:)

My 1700 also has a Hitachi S-12-62. Please post the part # for the solenoid for future use. more times that not issue is with plunger getting rusty and stuck or dirt on contacts. Brushes are consumable but armatures should last a very long time unless it had manufacturing flaws. Manufacturing flaw shows up pretty quickly.

i found prices to be around $150 for a new after market starter for the 1710. that includes the solenoid. when i put the starter back together i wanted to install the brush holder upside down for some reason and i couldn't believe the through bolts didn't go through.

Let us know if after you put it all back to gather, it STARTS & RUNS. :confused2:
