calcium filled tire; valve leak: how fix?

mobile repair call out is $100 plus the other fees (about another $100).

The tire shop told me they'd break the bead and look at the tube to see if it could be repaired. How can they do that when it's still on the tractor?

my son teflon taped the valve (or probably the valve stem threads the cap goes over??) and now it seems to hold air. But I still think the torn tube with liquid seeping past makes sense. the teflon is probably just helping keep it all in.
It's actually easy. Just need a tire hammer, and a couple tire spoons.

I changed quite a few tractor-trailer tires without removing the wheels from the truck, or even using a jack.

Breaking the bead is the hardest part of the whole operation.

it's likely a small hole in the tube.. very small that is seeping..

Having repaired a few, I am against Filling a Tire. If you need the weight get some bolt on weights.

You can make or buy a slide hammer "Bead Breaker". It will work with the tire & rim still on the tractor. A couple of spoons to get the tire over the rim and the tube will come right out.

Be sure to mark the valve stem & tire so you know where to look for what made the hole in the tube. Clean the rim and when ready to put it back together use a generous supply of talc (baby power will work.). That helps the tube get adjusted without folds. Air up then let the air out. Refill with air and get to work.:thumbsup:

Good tip about the talc. Hopefully I will never need it. Another thing that took me a while to figure out is the stripe on the tube. It goes towards the side of the rim with the valve. Someone correct me please if I'm wrong cause I haven't had to do one in a couple of years.

not everybody has the budged to buy bolt on weights. they can cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars. whereas filling a big tire with essentially free water and somethig to keep it from freezing, and preferably, be non corrosive.. you can get lotsa weight fast.. large tires on a compact.. like a 16.9-24 are over 500# per side when filled.. and that's just water weight.. no ballast. IE.. that's 1000# FREE weight.. toss in 30$ of antifreeze and you have 1000# for 30$.

How much bolt on weight can you buy for 30$? you can hardly buy the BOLTS for the bolt on weights for that much $$ :(

Real cheep until you have to call someone to fix one. Or wait 2 days for the water to drain out. Down time can be very costly on a "for pay" job. A rim with 30 cents worth of antifreeze will more than likely rust.

I don't call people to fix my tires. I fix my tires... Kinda figures nto that bugetary niche of not being able to afford thousands of pounds or dollars of wheel weights.. :)

2 days to drain water? why.. put some air to it and let it pee in a drum thru a hose.. keep adding air. you can get then down to 20% that way.. fast.

3o cents of antifreeze? why on;y 30 cents? why not a few gallons per side? Like I mentioned.

doesn't have to be 50/50 like your car radiator.. only needs to be mixed strong enough to prevent a solid freeze. even a 'slushy' is fine.

I've yet to have a weak a/f and water mix rust a rim.. and if you have a tube.. you are even better off.

when you do break down a tire.. make sure the rim interior is cleaned, and stays painted.

paint don't rust.

i favor epoxy paint.. good and hard..

as for downtime costing money? I agree.. that's what you have SPARE tires for... a bald tire on a rusty rim, but holds air makes for a GREAT spare.. not something for an every day driver.. but while you are fixin the other.. keeps the machine moving.

auctions or even tire stores are great for finding these kinds of spares if you aren't already colelcting them via attrition anyway.

Soundguy - we pretty much agree to disagree. :D

A little hard to change a 500 pound tire. OOPP's we need another tractor or some kind of lift to get one off and one on.

If someone has time to play you can rush the water out a little. It still takes a few hours.

Man handling a tube with several gallons of water in it is not much fun.

Tubeless tires can usually be plugged. But some fill material, antifreeze, water or what ever may keep the plug from sealing.

Yes I have been there and done it. I would never put anything like water or antifreeze in one of my tires.

I respect your way and ideas - Just not for me.
