Let's lose a tractor!

I hope all the weight loss plans have not gone the way of all the other New Years resolutions.

It has been a slow month for weight loss so far. . . .

I could write the same story, Doug. My weight loss has stalled, but I'm sticking with it for the most part and hoping that spring and summer activities will increase my calorie burn and bring back better results. We are going out to eat once per week unless we are travelling or have company. Otherwise, my diet hasn't changed much. For example, I had two tangerines with my coffee for breakfast this morning. I'm still eating no sweets at all and a small amount of bread on rare occasions.

That's terrific news that you are back to work. I'm sure your weight loss has had a dramatic impact on your healing from surgery and preventing further problems. I'm hoping everything continues to improve for you.

Our competition ended and I was down 25 pounds to 214. I'm pretty happy right where I'm at. I could stand to lose more, but I feel like I'm at a sustainable weight, especially over the summer. I'm still trying to stay away from sweets as much as possible, as my family has a history of diabetes. The hardest part is keeping them out of the house, especially with an 8 month pregnant wife and 2 little boys. Easter was tough.

Through a series of equipment trades, I ended up with a Wii fit. I wasn't looking for one, but it's what the guy had to trade. I took the Wii rather than a series of monthly payments.

I've been using it now for about a week, and according to the Wii, I'm down almost 5 pounds in that week. It amazes me how much that silly little character on the screen can work a guy. The thing about the Wii vs. running or other exercise is that it's fun and I find myself looking forward to it.

I'll keep this thread posted as to further results.

Still working on the weight loss. As of this week I am down 62 pounds for the year. Over 75 since last summer. It helps that I have been active this spring working in the garden and outdoors a lot. Don't know just how far I will go but I would like to get down and maintain at about 240 which is about another 20 pounds of so.

Well done. I'm proud of you all.

I went from 230 lbs to 180 lbs when I was diagnosed with diabetes. It wasn't bad and it's easily controlled with diet but it did mean cutting out all the stuff I really enjoyed. Ok, it was mainly junk but I enjoyed it. That and the fact that my wife was an absolute angel. She did all the research about foods and their preparation. We experimented and found out what affected my blood sugar worst and what didn't. It was interesting and informative. The weight just came off at a couple of pounds a week and 180# just snuck up on me. It was a milestone because that was roughly what I weighed when I came to the States in 1985. I could probably stand to lose another 10 pounds but I'm fairly happy with where I'm at.

Keep at it guys. It's not easy but it's definitely worth while. Don't get discouraged, you'll hit those plateaus. Stick with it and maybe increase your physical activity a little bit and it'll start on the way down again. Also, since your carrying less weight, you'll most likely be more active than you were so you may be losing fat but building and toning muscle at the same time. The scales may not be telling the whole story but how your clothes fit should give you an indication of how your body shape is changing.

Dusting off this old thread to see if anyone else found something that worked?

After getting up to 227 lbs (Holidays, 2010) My wife and I decided that was enough and started to look for a diet that we can live with (link below). I'll let you know if it works next year...

She found a diet for diabetics that looked good, low carb (not, the "no carb" one). Pretty much no white food (that includes beer, potatoes, pasta, rice, sugar, bread) but includes meat (bacon!), veggies, nuts, eggs, red wine, cheese. I'm down to 203 and looking to stop around 190. It's not a cheap diet, that's for sure.

Bottom line is reduced carbs below 100/day. I think of it this way... what do they do to cattle right before market? ...fatten them up. ...with what? ...Grains/carbs! I switched from good dark beer to hard liquor... (ok, so I cheat a little )

Did anyone else stick with losing weight?

This is what my wife started reading but you can google "diabetic diet" for others (I've glanced at it... but mainly just eat what she makes :licking:)

2010 was not a good year for me. Had a couple of serious set backs that kept me on the couch for over 6 months. As a result some of the old eating habbits have returned. I am still down about 40 pounds from my high of a few years ago. My current limitations still will not let me do much outside other than walk.

Weight loss is more than just a short term goal. It must be a lifestyle change for it to be permenent.

It's funny to see this thread come back up again. I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I lost about 10 pounds from my original weight and I've held it steady there. For me the only thing I changed was that I weighed myself nearly every day (Wii fit). That little bit of feedback helped me to adjust my eating and lifestyle habits to maintain my weight. The biggest change in my eating habits is that I eat a lot less for dinners. When I used to have two and three helpings followed by something sweet afterwards, I find myself content now to have a small helping for dinner and be done.

I think the best book on food/diets I read was "In defense of food". Talks about eating how our grandparents ate.
I do that a lot, I dont buy much grocery food in the summer most if not all comes from our garden.
Breakfast for me is 5 grain (oatmeal) with some almonds and a cup of coffee (no milk the lactose kills me).
My gram lived to be 92 having two slices of wheat toast for breakfast and a cup of coffee. She then had a small lunch and larger dinner. She ate mostly the food that her mother cooked. She worked all day, gardening or in her house.
I just try to do the same, I hope I get the same results. My mom died of liver cancer at the age of 62, never drank. She Did have bad migranes. She was on some heavy duty meds for. I dont think that helped her. She also did not eat most of the food that my gram did. Either way, if eating a bit better will let me live as long and healthy as my gram, Ill do it in a heart beat.

I noticed that the other day, during an doctor's visit weigh in, I weigh the same as when I was a HS senior. 158lbs.

My secret cannot help anyone...But my best friend, he lost lot's of weight by eating more...he attempted to never be hungry. He ate 3 meals a day, and two snacks a day, and he shedded weight like mad.

I understand how that works, but he used a book for the specifics. I could ask him the title if anyone is interested. He loved the book, but I didn't like it enough to be able to sit still and read it all. His goal was not to lose weigh, but to just be healthier. He is a busy person, and a hard worker, but he did not increase his activity one iota as best I could tell.
