Thanks for the pic and the info, does the stuff usually come out the front, back, sides, or all of the above?
Rick

On ours stuff mainly kicks out of the back, some comes from the front and the steel sides keep the safe contained (no derbies unless running very high)

Same here, I don't get anything out of the one with chains, but our Woods doesn't have them and stuff flies out the front and back.

I was mowing the other day and found a basketball sized rock. It was split in half and the top half flew 10 feet out of the mower, but otherwise I haven't had anything come out when I had the chains on.

Man, I sure am glad we don't have rocks on any of our farms, that's got to be rough on equipment and nerves.

The worst part was that I was turning, so the tail end of the bushog was pointing toward the road (but ~3' lower in height than the roadbed)

Mowing the secondarys is not that bad of a job, especially when your way out in the country.

Especially the old 2 track roads that no one lives on but have to be maintained as they are still owed by the county. The problem was the only maintain was mowing, so you never knew what you were driving into.

We had chains, it didn't phase heavy or fast moving things like tires or paper boxes.

It's the reason I buy older ground engaging equip, I'm more paranoid about my finish mower since I paid the most for it. I do have some bruises on my knees from plowing this week and catching rocks that were stopping the tractor in it's tracks. I need to locate a trip spring plow in my price range.

I have never thrown a tire out and I have hit a lot, man what a racket and a whole lot of shaking; never hit a paper box. Maybe my machines are not big enough to throw one out.

When I was growing up, whenever working "new ground" we hit roots for years and a trip plow sure would have been nice and cut down on the bruising.

t and a whole lot of shaking;

 The tire scared the crap out of me the first time I got one. I didn't have a clue what was going on the tractor was shaking so bad. They don't always seem to launch out, only sometimes.

Another time I though I broke something good, I hit a large around 4ft diameter rock in a ditch during the first cutting and the tractor felt like it was coming off the ground it was shaking so bad. It bent one blade up and over the stump jumper, had to have the mechanics come out with a torch to get it off. We were running around 70-80 hp for the 6ft side wings and would hook those tractors up to the 15ft batwing.

I hated that thing as you had no clue what you were going to find.

I don't know for sure, but a metal plate will be moved along its entire length when it hits an object exposing the whole length while chains will only expose those areas immediately affected, so it "seems" chains "may" be better.
In fact there are many small plates hanging from a horizontal axle, so they are also able to adapt to the situation. What I was asking myself is whether a length of chain, because of weight and inertia would better stop projections, or whether the more rigid olate would better deflect them.

I sure am glad we don't have to deal with rocks here, stumps are bad enough, but have not broken anything other than shear pins.

I have never seen one like that, interesting question.
