gravel driveway weeds, argh!

Thats kind of odd, seeing as most of us are creatures of habit we usually will drive either center or to the side not all over the road in a different spot everytime. I dont doubt you do it, just seems odd. I still also am amazed that yall come and go enough to keep all the grass killed off. Heck some of the county roads around here have grass in them and they get way more traffic than your drive.

A lot of it is that the surface stays well packed and roots cant penetrate without being promptly squeezed to death. Our 1mi drive has about 10 vehicles a day but most is down the beaten path of thoughtless habit. Pretty much only my wife and I drive the adjacent margins to forestall formation of ruts and puddles. Between our cars and farm machinery it is almost enuf. Some have said it looks like it is State maintained.

nybirdman - that's pretty much what I had in mind! I assume you used perforated tubes or drilled small holes?

troutsqueezer - the ones I saw on NT have one nozzel on each end of the boom. when you focus the spray pattern, does that leave a big gap in the coverage? requiring multiple passes?

I use the hand held spray attachment, not the boom. Gives me more control over where to spot spray. For continuous spray patterns I hold it in one spot and tool along.

I've heard of people using these:
DR Power Grader

They are actually made for leveling gravel, but the scarifying teeth tear out the weeds. I guess if you bought one of these and used it 3 or 4 times a year you could keep the weeds/grass out and you would also get a leveled driveway! But they cost $1000-$1400 depending on options.

I use a 4 Gal. back-pack sprayer from Harbor Freight, cost about $20, filled with Roundup Quickpro. My drive is 800ft. long X 20ft wide. Mostly I only have to spray the edges, about once a month. Takes a 1/2 hour or less. We also try to vary our path down the drive to avoid making ruts and it helps keep the weeds down too.

Mr Higgins, I may order a 4 gal backpack sprayer. Thinking I may be able to slowly drive my tractor along the driveway while aiming the wand along the edges...otherwise do it on foot. It's got to be 4 times more efficient than my current 1 gal sprayer!

Slunk, I have a Landpride rake with gauge wheels which does the job nicely, problem is it brings the larger stone to the surface and buries the pretty pea gravel.

Unless you have a big foot area there is probably no way you can sit on your tractor with a backpack sprayer on? The only option is if you have enough room to let it sit at your feet, but seems like you will be up fairly high. A riding mower would be better or sitting on the tailgait of your truck as your wife idles along.

Strap it to the ROPS? Let it rest on the fender.
