Spotted a new addition to our local municipality. They are using this JLG drop deck to transport a small (48-54") zero turn mower. I am pretty sure that these run around $10K. None of the private lawn service companies have anything like this so I assume that it is being used as dual purpose trailer?

I wonder if their insurer sent them a letter saying that people were injured while unloading mowers from trailers and they wouldn't cover them unless they upgraded. I remember seeing drill presses that were cut up because they didn't have the latest guards and the insurance companies were threatening to drop them unless they got rid of them.

I would think they may have a scissor lift that they haul with the trailer, also. At least, I would hope so! Seems like a mighty fancy trailer for a mower.

Tax money. That's the answer.

Yep. Safer alternative. Look at all the old tablesaws getting destroyed only to be replaced by a Sawstop. Insurance companies love this stuff.

Yeah and how long will it be before a city worker lowers that trailer onto his foot....

I know of a telephone company that scrapped a bunch of miscellaneous trailers because they didn't have weigh rating plates on them. Rather than getting plates from the manufacturer or a certified engineer they scrapped them, and I mean scrapped them, employees couldn't have them, no one could buy them, they were taken to the scrap yard and photographs of them being cut up were required.:confused2:

Folks are making a lot of "assumptions" here that may . . . or may not . . . be close to right. I know government organizations waste a lot of money, but then a lot of other companies do, too. I think it would be interesting if the OP asked the proper city department why they have that particular kind of trailer. Sure, they could use a cheaper trailer for the ZTR, but if they have to have that kind of trailer for some other piece of equipment, why not a dual use instead of also buying a cheaper trailer for the ZTR?

The next time I see the city maintenance manager I will ask him about the trailer and it's alternative uses.
