Also, get 26 gage tin specified instead of 29 ga.

Wood barns have lasted for decades too. Most had corrugated galvanized tin that was thicker and heavier coated than whats readily available today. I think todays metal frames are slightly superior but I'm also hoping the painted tin I have will last at least 25 years as a covering.

I put up a 30x50 in 2002 and my package was about 12K with 2 walk-ins, 26 ga. steel, 4/12 roof, mid wall snow girt, but no overhead so that would seem like a good price. I put in no windows but did skylites and I wouldn't do that here again because that is a hole in the insulation. I didn't plumb a bathroom, and wish I had. I also wish I had spray foamed the bottom and top of the siding, as I leak air there. I did a "pier and beam" foundation for mine on the concrete guys recommendation. The piers were 5' deep because of frost concerns. You wouldn't need that where you are. I bought the most expensive of the buildings I priced because it was also the heaviest shipping weight. I think you will find no matter what brand you buy, it will come from a regional plant that builds for several companies. Mine came from SLC and some of the red iron had Rhino on it even though it wasn't a Rhino brand building. Read and UNDERSTAND the erection manual before you start. Just because there are bolts holes doesn't mean they all get bolts. You'll run short. I had to back up a few times because I THOUGHT I knew what I was doing.
There are advantages to both styles of construction. A pole barn is easier to finish inside and more versitile for being able to hang stuff on the wall. Doesn't need a foundation. Electrical might be a little easier in a pole barn. I ran mine surface in conduit. A metal building doesn't have poles to rot off and will withstand high winds better. Doesn't have a bottom cord on rafters so has more room overhead. Both go up quick with some help. Rain gutters are good, if you don't have snow to rip them off.

I have a 40x40x10 from Steel Buildings | Metal Buildings | Storage Buildings | HeritageBuildings.com that I built myself about 6 years ago. I put in the 3" fiberglass insulation ad their rollup door. I would recommend a tracked door instead of rollup because they seal better. Mine has a 4" gap at the top when it's shut because the roll gets smaller as it pays off.

A friend from work just built a 50x50x14 last year from the same supplier. He's pretty happy with it.

Just wanted to mention, there is a simple fix for the 4" gap on a roll-up door. There is a "rubber flap" (technical term?) that attaches to the top of the door, and when installed correctly, it seals the gap. It came with my doors from Steelbuildings.com.

Where you are building has a lot to do with what the final cost will be. The other variable that can be quite pricey is site prep and pad. I just finished a 50x75x16 with 25x75 lean to and 3-12x12, 2-10x12, and 3-walk through doors. The slab is 5" with #4 rebar on 16" centers. The building with labor was 40k as a weld up. That included building, windows, doors and gutters. The slab cost 21k for everything, or a little over $3.00/sf. Electrical in rigid conduit ran 8k. I don't know what the pad actually cost since I excavated the 800cy of select fill from my pond site and put it in myself.

Thanks again for all the responses ya'll. I think I am more confused now that I was when I started the thread.

The jury is still out on what I want to do, and I still have about two months to decide. But as I am getting some prices, and quotes and what not, the wood construction pole barn is looking better. I talked to my father-in-law and the original price quoted was for a regular construction pole barn, he said that the slab for the steel building I was looking at will run almost double what a pole barn slab would be. Yikes. Also, I think my bro-in-law with the power company can get me some free utility poles, which I know will be over-kill for this barn here in the deep south, but hey, if they are free why not. Also I can get 40 foot steel chicken house trusses for about $100 bucks each. So it is looking like I can build this barn for almost half what the steel building was going to cost me. I still haven't decided as I am in the process of getting some labor quotes and such.

I know the metal building would look nicer, and is probably better, but when a wood contruction barn with steel trusses meets my needs just as well, for half the price, it seems silly not to go that route. :confused2:

I can sympathize with both sentiments.

Usage will dictate what type of building to build. No need to spend the extra money if a slab is not needed. But if it is needed, saving the cost wil be shortsighted.

That's a nice building AGGIE. Like that overhang on the front!

It's a work in progress. Still need to put in the drain line in front of the lean to to catch the downspouts and then lots of gravel. Inside we are starting work benches, the 20x50 office build out, and insulation. It only takes money and a lot of it. I thought it was overkill in size, but we have already filled it up.

I forgot I made this thread.

I settled on what I want to do. I decided to go ahead with the steel building. It is a kit job that is being built by AlabamaSteel, they look to do real good work and that is what my builder always uses. I decided to go the steel route because it will last me forever, and will look better, and I think I got a pretty decent deal, mainly because my builder is putting it all together for 3k.

I don't have the exact numbers in front of me because I left the contract at home. (I'm at work)

40x60x16 red iron steel building set up for 4 large doors, two man doors included, 26 ga steel = little over 17,000

Insualtion- high quality radiant backed (can't remember name) R10 rated. = approx 2,500

Doors= two 12x12 doors and one 14x14 door on front wall, and one 14x14 door on back wall so I can pull thru. All doors are high quality Janus doors
= 4,000

slab= Father in law owns a concrete company and he is doing the slab and prep work, not sure on the specifics yet but he does great work. he said it will be no more than 10k, probably around 8k.

Labor for building shop, and installing doors and insulation= 3,000 This is where I am saving alot of money. This guy has a great rep but he owes my father-in-law a big because my father in law sends him some big jobs.

That is $36,500ish for the building installed and complete. Slab could be a few thousand less possibly. Which is good because I will still need to do electrical and plumbing. But I will be taking care of all that myself.

I am happy with that price for a good, high quality steel building completely built and headache free for me hopefully. lol :D

Bama,

How is the building coming along? Post pictures if you have them.
