New Post Hold Digger and how do you use yours?

I designed a system to modify a 3pt to a hydraulic. Went to Surplus Center and looked up a PTO Motor. Then Came up with a sleeve that would mate the motor to the PHD. Then I designed up a plate to mount the motor to and then the bracket to weld to the frame of the PHD.

End of the day it was the same cost as just going direct drive.

I did not go for the reversing feature but you are right. I caught a plastic 12" culvert and was jammed up for a moment. Complete panic in my face but then it broke the plastic and all was good with the world.

The controls will be the next step, but I have to convince the wife about the costs. Probably another $200 once I buy the control and the hoses. Not going to happen any time soon.

Today we set gate posts along our driveway. used the PHD to set 6X6 Pressure treated to support a 16 ft tube gate. our road has been built up and rocks go all the way down. it was chunky pulling sometimes.

Learned a lot, like even if you think you are not anywhere near the drain pipe double check, but that being said, I am struggling with something.

The post holes do not come out empty. Our soil is a real mix, but at the end of the day it is pretty good stuff. Not too sandy, not too much clay, very few rocks. But when I dig down no matter what I do (pulling up and out frequently, speeding up) none of it gets me an empty hole. I ended up pulling out the manual post hole digger to get the last foot of loosened dirt out.

Should I expect this or????

Yeah. That is my plan if I get jammed. I made sure I had JIC connectors to the motor so I can swap there. I was told not to remove the QD's once installed as they will leak.

I get the cleanest hole by doing a spinning up/down, then running the auger to the bottom and stopping it before the final pull-out. The dirt stays on the auger when it's not spinning. I still always have the manual digger handy.

I think most hydraulic skid steer diggers are rigid mounted so the curl function has positive control over the auger angle. Not sure what configuration works best for a PT.

That's a pretty neat idea.


I haven't had much experience on post hole digger, but i noticed that if you take into account the movement of the arc, you might try to start with the angle a little out of kilter so that the arc averages out with an oval hole as the result, but the post will sit pretty level. Also 'oversized' whole will allow you to plumb the post easier.

BTW that's a massive looking digger for sure!!

I just reread your other post and saw the picture. Why only just tilt. You can still modify so you can drill on slopes, using full gimble operation.

I built mine with both swivel and tilt and it was a waste of effort. I'm drilling in rocks and clay. On any significant slope the tractor must be either directly uphill or downhill from the hole. In those positions you can use the treadle to kinda stay in position. If it's sideways at all it will slide and rotate around the auger until it's straight downhill. That might not be the case with soft or sandy soil, but soft and sandy soil is mostly relatively flat.

If I were to do it again, I'd mount the motor rigidly and leave a little slop in the auger coupling. If I lived somewhere with gentle slopes and soft soil my original design might make sense.

I built it with a gimble (center bolt that is 1" GRADE 8) It works, kinda... I also put in two bolts to hold the gimble action if not needed.

I don't know why I never thought of doing it this way on my own, but I tried it today & it works much better than my now former keep-it-spinning-all-the-way-up-out-of-the-hole method.

We generally dig down about a foot, move the tractor ahead about 4-6 inches, and dig the rest of the hole from there.

Just kidding, we dont have a post hole auger here in Branson, as I have never found a place around here you can dig more than a foot deep without hitting a limestone shelf rock. Unless you truck the soil in. Same with a backhoe. I would have both if they were of any use to me. Those of you who have all sorts of tricks to drive ground rods, Please come here, I love a good laugh as well as the next guy. they use rock saws here to put in utilitys in most places.
I am just spouting off here, but I am actually very envious of you guys with dirt.

If you've seen the pics of my horse barn project, you'll see mounds and mounds of it, James. We've got close to a foot of topsoil, then clay, and finally a bit of gravel waaay down there.
