Gazebo Number One

On this post some one had posted a gazebo with a fire pit in the middle, is what you call a open air fire pit. I am assuming the roof is built special for those? I am curious as I would love to have one off my deck. It would have to be in the air, is this possible?

Eddie - As always I really enjoy your posts... this one is no exception. I can't believe the patience you have in prepping the cedar logs, even to the point of sanding all the nooks and crannies... it sure has paid off in the fantastic way they look. Your energy level is inspiring... reminds me very much of myself in my younger days, but at 62 I have to admit I'm slowing down some. I still always have to be doing something, but I'm just not quite as fast as I used to be! Can't wait to view that future post when your first paid camping customer is pulling through the gate. Keep it up!!

Thank You.

My thught is that it will add to my curb appeal. While you can't see it from the curb, it's all part of the process of coming into my place. From the front gate and fence, to the front pasture to the gazebo. I want it to be nice and for everyone who drives in to have happy thoughts!!!

Awesome Build Eddie . The use of the natural cedar is Great. In reading , I also thought of a Draw Knife , but in looking at the pictures of the logs , they compare to yue wood logs here , which a draw knife is useless on .

I personally think with the C channel in the cement , it will be a lot stronger than most realize . Although there may be some swelling or shrinking during the seasons , (as our cedar boards on our back deck have 3/8" gap in summer and sometimes as little as 1/8" in winter ) , I don't think it will ever move unless you want it to .

You mentioned Liquid nails . I have never had much luck with that brand and have been using the " Loc-Tite " brand ( same people who make the stuff in the little red bottles for bolts , etc.. ) , Have You ever tried it ?

And I Truly Love Oscar . AWESOME !! But Typical of that breed , when it gets hot they find shade and take a nap .

Again , Super Job !!

I was up late last night working on my metal brackets. I bought them from King Architectural Metals Wrought iron & aluminum metal balusters, spindles, stairs fence & gate hardware, hinges& handles, finials, steel pipe & fittings, automatic gate openers-operators, Access Control a few years ago. This really has been something that I've been planing on building for quite awhile!!!!

Each bracket needs to have four 5/16 holes drilled in them. Then I will sand blast and paint them. If the paint doesn't last, I will get them powder coated, but I have these same brackets on my hot tub gazebo, and there isn't any sign of rust or wear on them after about five years.

When I'm working on something, Oscar likes to come check out what I'm doing, and then sort of hang out in the area. Last night, he set up watch just outside my shop door. About the only thing that I've trained him in is to NOT come into my shop!!!

I am impressed with your build. I have been watching it and am waiting for the final pics. I was thinking about putting up a pavillion in the backyard, but when I saw this I put my project on hold. Any chance you could hurry up and finish this?:)

My real problem is that we don't have cedar in my area and trucking in logs would be costly.

When you are all done, how about drawing up some prints, a hardware list/material list, and inlcude a step by step plan. I would defintely dowlaod it for free.:)

Thank you. I'm not getting as much done as I had hoped I would, but it's not really a suprise either. Work has a way of taking up a lot of my time, as do other projects.

I don't really have a plan, or anything in writing. It's just a picture thats in my head that I'm going off of. I've done some quick sketches on graph paper to see if I can change a few things, but none of those look like what I see in my head.

I have more pics and comments on facebook, if you want to look there.

Right now I've been sandblasting the brackets that I'm using to brace the tops of the posts. Before I could install them, I had to trim and sand the posts to get a 90 degree angle to fit the brackets into place. Then I drilled four holes into the brackets, sand blasted them, primed them and painted them. It's a slow process that is painful because of the heat. 18 days in a row of 100 plus temps!!!
