The Pigeon Forge cabins? I'm wondering if they are as nice as they appear on the website? I'm been deceived before when resorts post photos when everything is new and when you arrive you get disappointed.

Here is a link that may help.Sherwood Forest Resort (Pigeon Forge, TN) - Campground Reviews - TripAdvisor. Last fall I took the motor home Pigeon forge for a week in mid October. I have never seen a small town that crowded in my life. I towed my jeep behind the motor home so I could go site seeing in the mountains. I got there Sat and after getting set up went for a joy ride in the mountains. It was like driving in down town Chicago in rush hour. People would actually stop in the middle of the road and get out to take pics. At this point I was starting to wonder about my choice of vacation places. Sun. was just as bad if not worse. Luckily when Mon rolled around 75% of the people were gone. Then I could joy ride and take in the sites at my own pace. For the rest of the week I had a great time taking in the sites. It is beautiful country in the fall.

I'm originally from East Tennessee and just hate what has happened to the Sevierville-Pigeon Forge-Gatlinburg metroplex. It is just like all the other "gateways" to national parks. Here in Missouri, we have Branson, which is about the same thing. That said, the Smoky Mountains are worth the hassle of grinding your way through that mess. Now, I do apologize if the "Branson" experience is what you are looking for rather that the natural beauty of the park, but I'm more of a swim in the river kind. If you want the natural park experience, you might consider looking at the Townsend area, which is the other main entrance to the park. It so far doesn't have the Dollywoods and such. There are lots of cabins to rent there and you can get into the park without the traffic jams of Pigeon Forge. As Bill said, even on the quiet side of the park the weekends get busy. For instance, I don't think you'd ever be able to drive the Cades Cove loop road on the weekend without about a million other folks. There's a nice drive from Townsend to Pigeon Forge through the Wear Valley, so if you want a quieter place to stay but also want to hit the Pigeon Forge places you can. When you can get to it, Gatlinburg is still neat, partly because the area it is in is limited so the big attractions don't fit. The drive from Townsend to Gatlinburg theough the Little River Gorge is also beautiful.

Aw man, I wasn't expecting that info. I would prefer a nice, quiet peaceful vacation. The less people, the better :) I would most likely visit during the week though so that may help with the crowds. The websites sure do make it seem like a quiet getaway, that is why I asked for some opinions. What do you guys think of the cabins, are they nice?

Edit: Sheww, a lot of mixed reviews. I don't think I will be going there. Customer service and dirty cabins seem to be the biggest complaints.

We stayed in a privately owned cabin in Townsend several years ago, and it was nice. Having trouble remembering the name--seems like everybody gives their cabin their own special name.

What I remember better is we went hiking that trip and ran into a persistent copperhead that would not get off the trail in front of us, and there weren't any stick or rocks around to run him off with.

My wife and I used Cabinsusa . We stayed a week there andthe cabin was very nice. It was located in Waresvalley about 10 minutes from Pigeon Forge. Where it was located was very quite and private. We really enjoyed our stay. We were there the last week of September. and it was somewhat less people there at that time.

It's been at least ten years since we rented a privately owned cabin in Townsend. Great cabin and fairly private. As I recall, at that time groceries were hard to buy right in Townsend, but we could easily go to Pigeon Forge to a big supermarket. My son and I did the hike from Cades Cove to Gregory Bald. It was beautiful and we saw less than twenty people the whole hike. Actually, no matter how crowded the main park is, if you want to walk at least a mile off the roads you'll find relative privacy....most folks see the park from their cars.

On our hike my son, who was skipping up the mountain while I trudged along, saw a bear cub. Luckily he did not disturb the cub or the mama bear that must have been close by. I just looked up that hike....11.3 miles and 3020 feet of elevation gain....wonder if I could do it again! That time I trained for a few weeks prior to the trip.

Try checking out the Dept. of Agriculture National forest recreation sites. Just as nice and much less crowded. I have sometimes found ourselves to be alone in some camp areas. Some more popular areas also have cabins.

Yeah, but I heard they have a corrupt Sheriff in those parts. Then there are rumors of "Merry Men" running around in the woods in green tights and feathers in their caps.

Not sure what to think about that place. Do you think the news reports are just hype?
