25 acres, house and 42' x 54' garage= $4000. No trash pickup, no school (son is home schooled), plow my own driveway, almost no local services except beach access to the lake, 6 miles away.

10 acres, 1800 sf doublewide manufactured house, 1100 sf shop (all metal construction), 6 years old. About $3000/yr for the first 4 years. Then the real estate crash. Reassessed by CA law. Now $1900/yr.

Here in CT I only have 9 acres, but I was able to put 6 of the 9 into forest service land which yielded a tax savings of about $650 per year or so, if I sell or develop any of it in 10 years I owe all the taxes back on it but I don't plan to do either. In fact, I was able to pay off the mortgage this past weekend so the way I look at it now taxes are about $800/month which is way cheaper then renting a place.
I think you are being gang raped.
How in the world is a guy suppose to retire on his own place with taxes like that.

the best part is that I pay less than anyone else around me

Connecticut is a fine state to slowly pay out every penny you've saved in taxes of one form or another.
Even though, that's some high taxes AMR, but as a fellow Nutmegger I'm not too surprised... I suspect you live in closer to the big city than I do.

4k for almost 7 acres in a rural setting. A few years ago (5) it was $1800 py.
The property taxes shot up after we got a tax break from the feds.. or as I say "what tax break?"

I'm on an acre, 1/4 mile from the lake, no sewer, water, or garbage pick up, 4600 square feet plus garage and pay about $1200.00. I'l be 65 soon and lower that to about $900.00 Taxes here are mostly based on value, mine being a little under $500,000.00 Hopefully if you can manage to buy something here, you're likely able to afford to keep it. Taxes can also be deferred for pensioners, payment being made on your death or sale of the property. Sounds like I'm not being oppressed by goverment as much as I thought.

31.8 Acres, 1200 sq. ft. house and 1000 sq ft. old barn. Paid nearly $1600 in property tax. This includes State, County, School, Conservation district and Library tax. Each of these entities are allowed to raise their rate up to a 1/4% each year, and they all raise it the maximum every year.

At last - something where us Brits aren't paying twice as much as you in over in the States (although some of you have it cheap)!

Here property is banded A to H, and land does not count significantly to the band in countryside (it can in towns), and for approx 2000 sq ft + 1200sq ft shed/stables we are in band G.

This year it is GBP 2424 = USD 3878, payable in 10 monthly installments. Of this, 79% goes to County (Roads, Schools, Libraries, Fire, some social services) 11% goes to Police (they love their Helicopter) and 9% to the District (waste disposal, planning, some social services) and <1% to the Parish (local bits and bobs).

Water supply is extra - I think about GBP 320 = USD 512, drainage is free (own tanks).
