OK, our oldest son got sick of the troubles with his Craftsman DYT 4000 tractor and so, at mom's urging, I picked it up from him. My wife wanted it and wants it to cut grass. OK, except that this tractor has history. Lots of it. While a good machines otherwise, it ate batteries from day one and always needs to be jumped to start, with occasion No Starts. "You can fix it, right?" she asks.

I am going to go completely through this machine. Starting with alternator. Pulled the cowling and flywheel. My little puller worked great. And there it is. Shot!! Burnt to a crisp. No big shock. Have a new voltage regulator and alternator coming Tuesday. New battery, again!! I'm going through the wiring harness inspecting for nicks.

I've already put on a new electric PTO clutch. Impact gun makes life easy. Pulled off the front drag link and straightened. I've got new drive and deck belts ready to install.

Pulled off the valve cover and adjusted the valves. They were perfect, which surprised me, but I loosened and re-set at .004 anyhow. The "book" says adjust every two years. It's an easy task.

I'll post more later as parts arrive and the work progresses.

Once the cowling is removed, the next step is to remove the round debris grill plastic cooling fan. Just a few cap screws.

Then, the flywheel must be pulled. Loosen the big center bolt, install the puller. That little puller is probably 25 years old and cost me no more than $7. With an air gun, easy. Once you pull the flywheel, the circular alternator is held on by 4 little screws. Got a feeling, because of the time involved, I suspect this would be quite pricey to have done at a repair shop or through Sears. I can make a tool list for anyone contemplating this or similar repair.

Interesting project. Even more interesting if its not your only mower and the front yard is half mowed....

Here's a photo of my cheapo, oldie puller. It's pulled everything from gears, to steering wheels, to flywheels over the years. That flywheel is very, very thick and heavy iron.

Tool list includes:

Air compressor and gun. Suppose it can/could be done without one, but why? :D

Standard assortment of box/open end wrenches. SAE/metric. Seems to be a mix, as per usual these days.

Impact sockets, plus basic ratchet wrenches, sockets and extensions. etc.

Torx. Lots of small sizes and couple rather large T-20, T30 size.

Really, nothing most guys don't have in their mechanic tool sets. Nothing over the top odd or unusual at all.

Ah, yes. The old "stand by", ie, the push mower. Which is precisely why the wife wants this tractor up and running.

That's an interesting project and I'm sure the rest of it will be, too. I'll look forward to seeing it.

I have a 1988 Craftsman 18 hp that I bought new. Never adjusted the valves. I did replace the governor and the fuel pump after a belt came loose and tore them up. A fuel line melted, I don't know if age or the new gas got to it. I rebuilt the deck, put new spindles in a few years ago. Parts are easy to get. I really worked that little thing hard, for years it was THE tractor around here. I know what you mean about power tools. After I bought my first impact gun, I thought, why didn't I do this years ago????

Briggs with overhead valve engine states adjust every 2 years. From what I understand and read on the sites, the surest sign is hard starting.

This engine is so solid, I'd like to keep it going for another 5-6 years, which should be well within its life expectancy.

Here are two great videos, same guy.

Maybe I can do that this winter. I also probably owe it a spark plug or 2.

Got the deck and belts back on. Re-levelled the deck to the garage floor. It was off a bit. Adjusted the hanger brackets as one was "tweaked" from driving the deck into something, no doubt. Re-installed the hood and heat shield in front.

Both parts arrived in the mail. Alternator and regulator. Unfortunately, the alternator was NOT the correct one. #696459 instead the required #696457.

Ugh!!! Ladies and gentlemen, there will be a short delay. :(

Bird, it was built in 2005. That makes it six years old. Around 150 -200 hours, I believe. No meter.

Since the yard is a crisp, as we've had only one serious rain event in 3 months, the delay is more aggravating to me than to the better half.

The lack of rain is getting serious around here, too. The yards are nearly all looking bad. Of course, jinman has his own well, so his looks pretty good.

Nice project. Thanks for posting. Mind I ask what the parts cost?

The big heavy flywheel is due to it being a big single cylinder with OHV. Old sidevalves just don't have as much compression and could make do w/o so much flywheel. I highly recommend you put synthetic oil in it for durability since its aircooled.

BTW, is the rear axle a tufftorq 46? If so, you might want to do a search on TBN for it and drain and replace the oil in it.

Kyle, thanks. Yes, I'll run Rotella 5w-40 synthetic in it. I don't bother with having 6 different oils around for the equipment.

The stator/alternator lists for around $45. Not much cheaper anywhere, just a buck or two. A few places charge even more.

The regulator is around $40, with a few sites showing more, some less. Shipping isn't bad because these parts are not heavy.

Battery was on sale for $32.

Tufftorq 46- I assume so. Craftsman parts lists doesn't call it that. More research needed. If you have a link to an effective way to empty the fluid and re-fill, I'd like to see it. I've seen some who "suck" it the top and some who tap and drill a drain plug. Either way, I assume the seat and fuel tank need to be removed?

I have a Husquvarna with a 2 cyl Kawasaki motor. Had it for seven years and put my first new battery in it the other day. It has been a dream machine. My wife calls it her tractor as I have the CK30. I wish I had a shed with a floor like yours, mine is dirt...

OK, Finally time for an update.

After getting two wrong alternators (stator charging rings) shipped, seller errors, I finally got the right one.

It is a 9volt regulated type. Single black wire, with green connector. Should be simple, but there are alot of Briggs variants, but I ordered using the correct part #, so there shouldn't have been the screw ups.

Hottest day of the summer so far, heat index of 108 and I'm dripping sweat putting this thing back together.

Install the alternator. There are slight studs that need to recess into the block which is bored out for them. You gotta hold you mouth just right to get all of them recess down in there. Run the wire carefully through the wire clamp and chase of the oil dipstick holder.

Next put the flywheel back on. Ooops. It really choked with old grass and dust. Let's blow that out clean.

Magnets nice and clean, install flywheel, don't forget keyway, and drive it down.
