JD 4200 HST
Hello.
My 2001 JD 4200 HST has been running fine until recently when after a few hours, the power began to diminish, the engine RPM's cut right down and the whole engine would nearly shut off, and at times would then cut out completely. The tractor would start right back up again, rev up and then rev down and almost stall. At full RPM's it ran great ,until I depress the foward hydrostatic pedal, and the power reduced way down again. I was barely able to get it back to my barn without stalling. My top speed at theat point was about 2mph, any faster and it felt as if the engine would cut right out and stall. My fuel tank was about half full. Anybody have this problem before? Is a fuel problem to the injectors? Is it an overheated thermistor?

thank you

John

I'm not much of a diesel mechanic but I'd try fuel filter.

As stated, try the fuel filter and then check all the lines starting from the tank.

There have been cases where debris in the fuel tank intermittently blocks the outlet.

Check for water in the fuel too.:)

Hello & WELCOME to TBN!

I moved your thread to the John Deere Owning/Operating Forum. :)

Well, John, your tractor is 10 years old, and there is almost certain to
be sludge sediments in the bottom of your fuel tank. The sludge is now up
to the level of the fuel pickup.

JD was nice enough to put a drain valve in the base of your tank to assist
with cleaning it out. If you open it, don't be surprised if nothing comes out.
It's clogged. Blow back with compressed air to free it up.

I agree with others that you have a fuel starvation problem, which will
also require opening up your fuel filter bowl.

Try loosening the cap on the fuel tank. If the problem goes away, the vent hole in the cap is blocked.

Ok so I pulled the plug from the bottom of the fuel tank and out poured a large clump of gook, then clean fuel. I then blew compressed air into the drain plug, and all lines from the injector pump back. I cleaned the air vent on the fuel tank screw on top. It's running like brand new now. Hold full power at 30K RPM uphill with 5 foot brushhog going. That seemed to be the problem, thank you very much.
