Ford 601 Workmaster
Recently bought a 601 workmaster with dead hydrolics. Started up the tractor pulled up on the lift and nothing. There was a leak where the allen type plug is in the top of the gear box. Some one had replaced the allen plug with one of the plugs that go in a water pump. I took teflon plumbers tape and stopped the leak. First I thought that it had been over filled by someone that had recently worked on it right before I bought it, so I tried to bleed the hydrolic fluid to get excess air out, that didn't help. Can't find out who did the work on it, because the man I bought the tractor from died right after I bought the tractor. I don't know much about hydrolic systems on tractors so any help would be greatly appreciated. I did find out that there is a little gismo that some times gets stuck in there, can't remember just what it is right now because I don't have my manual close by., but first I need to try and fill the thing with fluid and take it from there. Any reply on this is appreciated greatly.

I did some other work on it to get it running.

Took off gas tank and and cleaned it out.

Replaced the shut off valve under the tank.

Replaced the cork gasket in the little glass bowl.

Did an electrical tune up. Plugs same as factory suggest, rotary button, new coil etc. For some reason the factory type plugs made a huge difference in starting.

Changed points and set gap.

Put a kit in the carburator.

Also put a new manifold gaskit on.

Will be putting hydrolic fluid in tomorrow and see what happens from there.

Thanks for any help with this,
Bennie

Will be needing to put a new wiring harness in this thing also it's a horrible mess.

Not sure wht type of plug you are refering to that goes in a water pump. but in any case, a 01 ford has a hyd fill under the seat, kind aunder your left thigh. there is a dipstick on the left side of the tractor.. kinda straight down from that fill ina round cover, near the pto engage lever.

oil type is a UTF meeting the ford/nh spec M2C134D.. generic equivalents like from TSc or walmart are fine.

there is a pipe plug on top of the engine mounted pump that you can remove to bleed oil. there is also a plug in a lil 3x5 option cover on top of the center section, under the right front of the seat.. can remove that plug there to see if you have oil.

if you have oil there but no lift, it's possible the unloading valve is stuck. you will want to get a service manual and a 13$ gasket and oring kit and then take the top cover off for a rebuild.

welcome to tbn, and if ya need more help, post back.

ps, under the back side of the seat on the right is the diffy fill, and by the tranny shifter on a straight gear model is the tranny fill. tranny oil level is checked by a plug ( not a bolt! ) on the right side just about where your right heel is on the side of the trans, diffy oil level check is by a plug on the backside, left side axle trumpet just about level with the pto shaft.
