I am nearing in on the 600-hour service. It appears to me that changing the hydraulic filters is part of the service, but changing the fluid itself is not. From what the manual says, I am to drain the fluid and change the filters. I guess they expect that I will put the fluid back in?

Has anyone just went "crazy" and just pulled the filters, worked diligently and then topped off as necessary?

Using a vacuum is quite successful, far more than just pulling the filter. There is quite a gush of oil that comes out but some have done it and only lost ?? gal.:D

vaccuum?

The service manual points to what seems like 1/2 dozen drain plugs across the entire undercarriage!

It depends on the tractor, my son can swap the filters on our L5030 and only loses a quart and we don't use a vacuum. Some tractors will drop more.

I would not drain the fluid only to put the used fluid back in after changing the filters. Nor have I tried the vacuum trick. I can change both the hydro and HST filter and only loose a quart or so of fluid which is not enough to see on the dip stick. Have the new filter ready, work quickly and it is simple. I follow the old schedule in the original manual for changing both HST and hydro filters and fluid: filters every 200 hours and fluid every 400. "Has anyone just went "crazy" and just pulled the filters, worked diligently and then topped off as necessary?" I think you have the right idea.

Too, it may help leaving the the transmission dip stick in and keeping the transmision filler cap on when swapping filters. just a thought...

The filter is going to hold quite a bit of oil, I don't know how you can get the oil out of it before removing it. My plan is to just quickly remove one and put the new one on quickly. Some oil will leak out and need to be replaced but it's better than replacing the oil or trying to capture the oil out of it and reuse it without getting any dirt in it. I may try the vac trick to help cut down on loss.

I think my plan is to clean the area around the filters very well. I will use my clean catch pan. I will have the replacement filter on "standby" with the o-ring lubed already. Off with the old, straight to the bucket, on with the new. Depending on how much flows out, I will decide if trying to reuse is worth it...if so, through the venerable coffee filter it goes.
