Didn't they use the 7.3 in schoolbuses in the 90s and early 2000?

International (the makers of the 7.3) have been using it (known as the 444E) for years in all kinds of medium duty trucks. Box trucks, wreckers, UPS/ FedEx trucks, buses, etc...

They ran the 6.0 PSD in Ford's heavy vans until 2009. I've ridden in several "limo", high end small busses) vans that have the 6.0 PSD in them. I rode in one about a month ago in Napa, CA. Those class vehicles are not (yet) subject to the same EPA regulations that the pickups are. Per Ford, in the pickup variation "The 6.4 L Power Stroke replaced the 6.0 L due to new emission regulations for on-highway diesel engines built after January 1, 2007". That makes the 6.4 PSD the shortest run of any diesel engine I'm aware of; 1/07 until the end of the 2010 model year. I doubt many other applications used that engine since it was available for such a short time.

International is using the 6.4 in medium duty trucks. It's called the Maxxforce 7, rated at 300hp and 660 lb/ft torque.

International used the 6.0 as well, I believe they called it the VT365. Maybe just V365. I didn't get as involved with the 6.0 engines, but I would expect International used them as much as they did the 444E, potentially more.

The 6.4 is kind of an oddball engine, I agree that it's probably the least used diesel in the modern pickup truck market. We have two 2011 6.7 trucks at work, and thus far they seem to be doing very well. The boss has a 6.4 truck, don't believe he's had any issues with it either.

Absolutely right. I was just in an 8 hour IH Maxxforce factory tech class last week. Look for some key 6.4 features to find their way onto the bigger Maxxforce engines such as the 9 and 10, like twin turbo's and a water to air intercooler that uses its own seperate radiator.

Dargo, I'm not sure what you mean when you say that "those class vehicles are not yet subject to the same EPA regs that pickups are". I am positive that class 8 trucks, school buses, etc have all used EGR, Catalyst, and DPF systems since 08, most also currently use urea. When you say those vehicles, are you referring to 2.5 ton and above trucks, or RV or motorcoach chassis that some of the large limo shuttles are built off of.

To my knowledge, the 6.4 replaced the 6.0 all together in IH's engine line up.

56Ford,

Are the '11 6.7's being worked pretty hard? Any idea how many miles, etc? How about performance vs the 7.3? Anything else you care to mention also.

Ford has some year end deals going until 9/5 and I'm talking to a couple of dealers about a 350. I've always tried to stay away from first year new models and a little nervous - appreciate any comments.

Thanks
Greg

The trucks are 2011 F-550s with 12' flatbeds. They routinely haul somewhere around 10,000 lbs on the beds. I don't drive one, but I've talked to the guys that do. They have about 20,000 miles on them, and they seem happy with the performance. One had to go back to the dealer, I think they said a knock sensor went bad. Overall, they seem like good trucks.

Thanks. Appreciate the info. What I want to hear is there are thousands of them out there saying they have 250k miles and never been to the shop other than regular service, but that's hard to accomplish in a year or less. I understand things break and that's normal, just don't want to get stuck with something that's in the shop a lot.
