Reason enough to change your own oil

I've got a busted air filter latch on my car because of the local lube center. A friend of mine lost an engine because of them.

I used to work in the industrial uniform business. I got to see any number of these places up close. It was not odd for a drain plug to be left out and get a couple blown motors every quarter. They went through people at a scary rate. Usually one of the 4-7 employees knew what the **** was going on. If I have any advice, don't go when they are busy. You are almost asking for it. I hate to plug Wal-Mart, but they were as good as any and better than most. You were spared the pressure sales as well. I will admit to using this kind of service a few times, but I know better.

When our '04 Lesabre was new my wife would take it back to selling dealer for free oil changes but after warranty expired there was a charge. I looked at invoices for oil changes, like most GM shops they charge for oil by the half quart (1/2 quart is one "unit") and invoices said they were putting 10 units, or 5 quarts, into an engine GM listed the capacity for as 4.5 quarts.
Took three most recent invoices to service manager and asked him: "Either you are overfilling the engine by a half quart or billing us for oil not put in the engine, which is it here"?
HE WOULD NOT GIVE ME A RESPONSE !!!! Went to dealership main office and raised all kinds of h--- and they finally gave me a cash refund for the oil they never added to the engine and also gave me a certificate for two free oil changes well I took the certificate and in front of the manager wiped it on my rear end and balled it up and threw it on the floor in front of him. Told him Mr. Monkeywrench would NEVER get any business from us again either in service dept. or new car dealership area.
Have never been back either, and that was several years ago. I wrote to both GM and Attorney General's office telling them it should be investigated. Makes me wonder just how many customers they scammed selling them a phantom half quart of oil. Frooking CROOKS !!!!!!

I asume he would\nt tell you he was overfilling it or that they were overcharging becasue he didnt know what your angle was..
I think by calling it what it was was outright fraud...

I had the local Jeep dealer leave the air filter lid off my wifes brand new Grand Cherokee.
Did not find it until almost 5k miles later when I did a random check under the hood before going on a trip!!!..
After all of this, I made them pull the intake system and clean it out and cheange the oil/filter at their expense. Next time I took it in, they left the right rear wheel loose and we almost wrecked it going down interstate. It ruined the wheel and several wheel studs. I have since fired that dealership and sold the Jeep!!!

Should have mentioned that both our Lesabre and my in-laws Lucerne had the air filters replaced by same dealership who was cheating on the oil fill, and in both cases the tech didn't reinstall the ductwork from filter housing to intake properly. MORONS !!!

You really showed them? What about all the wear on your engine internals from the road grit of 5K miles?
I would not have been so easy. They would either rebuild and hone my engine or put a new one in or give me one off the lot new.

I also discovered it much later, and I took it back to them, told them what they did. The filter was never seated right, the lid wouldn't close, and they stretched the clip trying to make it close. The latch popped off, and the one end of the filter was open. After I had paid and got the invoice back, they had written that it came in busted.

to be honest, after the mistakes they had already made, I chose NOT to let them touch the vehicle anymore. The last thing I wanted to do was give them another chance at screwing something up.
I DID make them replace the wheel, but did not let them replace the studs or install the new wheel. Once again, by that time, I was fed up. Made them buy the parts, but I did the work myself..
I was extremely concerned about the unfiltered air running thru the engine for 4800 miles... I ripped the service manager and the service advisor a new one right in front of several customers on a busy Saturday morning. I know the general manager of the dealership, had an in depth conversation about it and was assured that if the engine ever had a problem, he would personally take care of it.
